Police Tuesday said they believed three people carried out Sunday’s grenade attack on a crowd of law graduates and students that wounded 44 people—including two female students who lost their legs—but that they still had no specific suspects.

Malacañang condemned those responsible for the attack, which occurred during street revelry along Taft Avenue marking the end of this year’s bar examinations at De La Salle University.

One of the victims, San Beda College law student Raissa Laurel, had both legs amputated below the knee at Philippine General Hospital, police said.

Joanna Ledda, 23, another San Beda College law student who police said was in critical condition, had one of her legs cut off because of the blast.

Investigators said they believed the attack was an offshoot of a fraternity war.

Manila Police District (MPD) spokesperson Erwin Margarejo said it was “still premature to name names” because the investigating task group called Bar Operations 2010 was still evaluating the statements of witnesses.

Not a suspect

Margarejo said at a press conference that although the name “Jed Carlo Lazaga” had surfaced in the investigation, he has not been considered a suspect.

As of Tuesday, nine of the 44 victims were still confined in three hospitals around Manila—Philippine General Hospital, Manila Adventist Medical Center and Manila Doctor’s Hospital.

The other casualties have gone home after receiving treatment. Police said they included Mohammad Ampatuan, an Arellano University law school student and a member of the Ampatuan clan. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima gave the student’s name as “Mohammad Abdul.”

Politicians belonging to the clan are undergoing trial for murder in connection with the Maguindanao massacre, in which 57 people, including 32 media workers, were brutally gunned down in November last year.

A surprise

De Lima said Mohammad Abdul was among the more than 5,000 law graduates who took the bar exams.

“It’s a surprising piece of information. We don’t know if it’s just coincidence or what,” De Lima told reporters.

She said Mohammad Abdul had just stepped out from the school premises when the explosion occurred.

Citing a report by National Bureau of Investigation Director Magtanggol Gatdula, she described Mohammad Abdul as “a nephew” of the Ampatuans.

Lazaga’s statement

De Lima said it was premature to conclude if he was a target of the blast. She said NBI agents had been sent to interview him.

“We don’t know yet if this information is actually relevant to the investigation or not. He could be just an innocent victim,” she said.

The name of Lazaga, 24, a 4th year Law student of the University of San Jose Recoletos School of Law, came up after he accused members of another fraternity of beating him up minutes after the bombing to force him to admit he was involved in the attack.

In a sworn statement he gave at MPD Station 9, Lazaga claimed that he was walking along Vito Cruz when he was choked from behind by a member of one of the fraternities, who reportedly shouted to his colleagues, “Heto AKRHO ito. Kasama ito nung nagpasabog (He is an AKRHO. He was in the group of those involved in the bombing). ”

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
