The recent Nurse Licensure Examination was the most difficult examination characterized by a record high number of examinees (94,462) and lowest passing percentage (39.73%) in the history of the Nurse Licensure Examination. There were 4,814 examinees from Bohol and Cebu but only 1,980 passed equivalent to a passing percentage of 41.13%; however, this is 1.4% higher than the national passing percentage. Even the three top performing nursing schools in Cebu found difficulty in maintaining their high passing percentage. More than one half (14 out of 25) of the nursing schools in Cebu and Bohol obtained a passing percentage below the national average passing percentage. (Please refer to tabulation).
The College of Nursing of Mater Dei College, Cabulijan, Tubigon, Bohol, a catholic school that has the unique distinction of being the only nursing school that is located in a rural community in Region VII, was established to address the nursing education and religious needs of the marginalized sector of our society in the rural areas of Bohol. The exemplary performance of its pioneer graduates in the November 29-30, 2008 Nurse Licensure Examination, blazed the trail for the 2nd batch. It paved the way for the 2nd batch to perform creditably despite the very difficult examination. It successfully maintained its # 1 rank among the nursing schools of Bohol. In the Provinces of Cebu and Bohol it ranked # 1 among the new nursing schools established in 2003 and 2004, # 1 among the catholic nursing schools, and # 4 overall. It also ranked # 7 in Region VII and # 25 under the category 30-99 examinees nationwide.
Among the passers, Mrs. Blanche Mascarinas Laborte, has ranked # 18, nationwide. The feat of the MDC graduates proves once more that provincial students, when given quality education in their hometown/province, can be at par if not better than the metropolitan students.
