Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro is optimistic that the introduction of the
K (Kindergarten) + 12 basic education program starting school year 2012-2013 is one of the solutions to improve the country's ailing education system.
In an interview with reporters during a school visit at Ilugin Elementary School in Pasig City on Monday, Luistro said the K+12 program is a work in progress.
He told critics that it will take years to see the fruits of the program and encouraged them to look at the new curriculum and compare its "big" difference with the old one.
Critics have claimed that the program was hastily prepared and teachers still lack the training for the program.
"There is learning as you do the experience... Our curriculum modules will be refined by the teachers themselves, sila ang gagawa ng innovation para kapag ni-roll out na ito ay galing sa kanila mismo at hindi galing sa amin," Luistro said.
"Inumpisahan na natin ang pag-repaso ng curriculum at makikita ninyo na may malaking pagkakaiba sa pagtuturo sa Kinder, Grade 1 at Grade 7," he added.
He also reiterated that the additional two years in high school will begin in 2016 and not this school year.
The K plus 12 program extends the total number of years of basic education to 12 years instead of 10. Kindergarten is the base, followed by elementary (Grades 1 to 6), junior high school (Grades 7 to 10), and senior high school (Grades 11 and 12).
The Deped also said students under the K+12 program have better chances of gaining employment since they will be equipped with adequate skills after finishing junior high school.
