Assistant Professor of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department, College of Arts Sciences, Holy Name University, Mr. Joeppette J. Hermosilla, has won 2nd place in the Best Paper Competition with his research paper entitled Assessment on the Possible Impact of Marine Seismic Survey on the Local Fisheries of Bohol along the Cebu Strait. There were 42 research paper presenters from the different colleges and universities from the Visayas and Mindanao like the University of Carlos, Cebu City, Silliman University, Dumaguete City, and Xavier University, Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City to mention a few. Among the research papers presented were on climate change, impact of oil spill, biodiversity, and the population assessment of shells, corals and fishes and some aspects in the biology of these aquatic organisms. The said competition was held during the 40th annual convention of The Federation of Institutions for Marine and Freshwater Sciences (FIMFS) held at the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato last October 27-29, 2008.
The Federation of Institutions for Marine and Freshwater Sciences (FIMFS) was organized on November 9-10, 1968 at Xavier university (XU), Cagayan de Oro City when Fr. James A. McKeough, SJ then chairman of the Department of Biology of XU along with the other founding members like Dr.Angel C. Alcala of Siliman University (SU), Dumaguete City, Dr. Paulina Pages of the University of San Carlos (USC), Cebu City, Dean Domiciana K. Villaluz of the College of Fisheries, Mindanao State University (MSU), Marawi City, and DR. Rosalina I. Zamora of the Ateneo de Davao (AdD), Davao City. In 2004, the federation published the first issue of its refereed annual journal, the Journal of Aquatic Sciences.
From the five institutions that formed the group in 1968, FIMFS grew into a 20-member federation by its 40th or Ruby anniversary this year. The paper presentation done by Mr. Joeppette Hermosilla during the 40th annual convention of The Federation of Institutions for Marine and Freshwater Sciences (FIMFS) last October 27, 2008 qualified Holy Name University as the newest member of this federation of universities and colleges whose aim is to promote education and research in the marine sciences.
The study of Mr. Hermosilla was designed to provide a scientifically sound assessment on the possible impacts of the 3D marine seismic survey on the local fishery in the southwestern coast of Bohol fronting the Cebu Strait. It dealt with the monitoring of fish catch by the local fishermen in the municipal waters of Loon, Maribojoc, Cortes, Dauis, Panglao including Tagbilaran City before, during and after the conduct of the seismic survey last June-July of 2007. The study revealed that a decrease in the fish catch during the seismic survey also leads to a significant decrease in income of fishermen particularly in the open water fishery. The study further showed that the seismic survey activities significantly affect the offshore fishery as compared to the inshore fishery in the Cebu Strait particularly when it comes to income obtained from offshore fishing. Lastly, this information is crucial in the formulation and implementation of adaptive management program related to the conduct of seismic survey anywhere in the country on the possible impact of seismic survey in the marine environment. - Bohol Chronicle
