to continue:
7. back to our home country the next year, we enrolled her at an exclusive sectarian school. (i was after institutionalized first communion preparation. besides, the school is my own alma mater.) she went through the usual entrance exams. the results: as a grade 2 entrant, her level for reading and english language was grade 5; she earned passing grades for other subjects except, horrors, math and filipino, where she was below par.
the school's advice was for her to go back to grade 1 because her age anyway was just right for grade 1 (from the vantage point of the month of june, she was to turn seven that october). i readily agreed because she had no grades for grade 1 anyway. (though i thought that if she made it in all subjects in that entrance exam, i would have arranged for her to have grades from the distance learning school by asking for special exams for her, if it were possible.)
my conclusions based on this first-hand experience:
1. distance learning is by itself a great idea. depending on the family's location and the parents' priorities, it is safer for children and less stressful for them and everyone else in the family. there will be no harrassed mornings, no bullying either as perpetrator or victim, no excuse letters for absences due to ailments, no fear of vehicular accidents, no calls from the school principal for your child's expulsion or suspension due to bad behavior, and whatever else.
2. parental supervision is necessary, especially in the case of early graders. (i wish i knew better.) had i shown interest in supervising our little daughter's math and filipino lessons, i believe she would have taken interest in these two subjects too.
3. creativity on the part of parents as regards the homeschooled child's social development is necessary. (again, i wish i knew better.) otherwise, homeschooling is better if shared with siblings who can share study or homeschool time together.
4. homeschooling or distance learning is not for the undisciplined child or uninvolved parents.
5. accredited distance learning, like a home-based job, is here to stay. in a world that's becoming more fast-paced than ever, the pursuit of education can be done by letting the school "come" to our home.
6. it is an option. lucky us we now have this option.
