Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is suspporting the Department of Education's (DepEd) proposal to add two years of schooling in the country.
Duterte-Carpio said enhancing the country's education system is a must, considering that we export professionals and even then, other countries have made advices that we improve our students before they graduate.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro proposed the K-12 Enhanced Basic Education Program that would add a Grade 7 in the elementary level and fifth year in the secondary level.
Luistro said this is to put the Philippines at par with the global average of 12 years of basic education to make Filipino graduates globally-competitive.
"Yes, I would approve this. We are aware that when our professionals go out of the country, it's almost immediate that they are required to get additional training there or they need to have more training here because our education system is considered not at par with those countries they are working in," Duterte said.
"We have been advised by different countries to do this," she said.
However, the mayor said she would support K-12's implementation if DepEd will provide data that the country is ready. (PNA)
