PIA - Bohol

Seemingly losing time in a crucial attempt to arrest the trending "renovations" that otherwise tend to destroy heritage structures in the end, Bohol's attempts to keep the efforts at bay gets its corner stone this week.

Sectors here have asked, what happens to an eco-cultural heritage tourism destination dream when disconcerted efforts by some sectors tinkering with culture and tangible heritage in the guise of preservations make Bohol lose its treasures instead?

The question came amid a flurry of activities here presented as efforts to restore, conserve and protect tangible and intangible heritage, but destroy the priceless structures in the end.

In attempts to institutionalize a culture and heritage preservation and conservation, Bohol gets a boost after formalizing the Bohol Arts and Cultural Heritage (BACH) Code this week.

"The Code would be the bible of all arts, culture and heritage efforts and hopes to guide sectors in dealing with preserving the tangible and intangible heritage as well as institute a common response in matters affecting these," cultural workers explained.

This endeavor is a major stepping stone in Bohol's historic process of crafting what would be the most helpful institutionalized policy for preserving and revitalizing our cultural heritage, a letter from the Office of Governor Erico Aumentado stated.

And in perfecting the draft code, Bohol hopes to draw lessons and insights from the experiences of cultural and heritage preservation as well as the crucial processes towards crafting heritage laws.

In this line, sectors here would gather Monday to listen to resource persons from key Philippine heritage conservation efforts to tentatively pen the local BACH Code.

Convened by the Province of Bohol's BACH Council, Office of the Center for Culture and Arts Development, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Culture and the Arts, the gathering will form the initial seminar series on the BACH heritage code development.

"This is part of the on-going education process in preparation for the crafting of the BACH Code," Aumentado said in his letter to the invited participants.

The two day seminar workshop which would be on December 10-12 at the University of Bohol Instructional Resource Center will feature a talk on the Ifugao experience of protecting the Banaue Rice Terraces and the epic Hudhud.

The seminar participants also get to hear a talk on the Vigan experience in preserving and revitalizing the city.

Finally, the seminar affords a venue for a comprehensive study on the first version of the BACH Code and a people's referendum workshop on the BACH Code by council members and stakeholders in cultural development.

Set to participate in the seminar workshop are BACH Council members, provincial officials, mayors and town cultural leaders, tourism and business sector stakeholders, academe and the Diocesan Commission of the Cultural Patrimony of the Church.
