Corella From the Past to the Present

Corella
by: fdaray

Corella is the smallest municipality of Bohol with only eight barangay. In 2007, it has a popupation of more than 6 thousand. It is 10 kilometers away from the backdoor of the city of Tagbilaran. In the early '40s many Corellahanon went to Mindanao to look for lands. In Canangca-an , a group of men lead by Catalino Sayon first settled in Saug, now the municipality of New Corella. They tilled the land and latter brought with them their families. Many relatives from the first migrants from Canangca-an went to the place until it was called New Corella when it became a town in 1966. They were the first to own lands in the so called 'homestead'  with 12 hectares more or less which they occupied and cultivated. The land was swampy and developed into an irrigated big track of riceland. The smallest town of Bohol was able to built a big community in the province of Davao, now the town of New Corella. Based on my observation, there are many clans or group of families  that stayed in New Corella than in Corella Bohol. Many Corellahanon will have a vacation during the month of April  and May to see their left relatives timely for the fiesta which is celebrated April 27 and the fiesta of Tagbilaran on May 1. Though the smallest municipality, it is now becoming a tourist destination because of the conservation of the Philippine
Tarsier in barangay Canapnapan.

Canangcaan
by fdaray

Canangcaan is the biggest barangay in area and the farthest from the poblacion. It has a population of 850 as of 2007 census. It is the passway of the new route going to Balilihan, Catigbian to  the interior towns of Bohol. During the Spanish time, a certain Nangca tree was a meeting place of  people from the nearby barangay where they played tari-tari, hantak and other games during Sundays and holidays. From that time  on , it was called Canangcaan even if nangka tree did not grow in abundance.
It consist of four setios namely, Cang-anggod, Canghumangit, Cando and Pung-on , barrio proper. There is no major industry except traditional farming. Copra production is the main source of income. Some started the lumber production of gemelina and  mahogany which grows abundantly for reforestation. The place is turning to become a manmade forest. It is now fully installed  with complete water system and electricity.
The people were devoted Christian, peaceloving, hospitable and God-fearing.

Historical Development    of New Corella, Davao del Norte, the son of Corella, Bohol

The New Corella has a simple history fifty-five (55) years ago. In the year 1935, five years before the outbreak of World War II, a group of Boholanos headed by Catalino Cajes Sayon, a young agricultural graduate and fresh from his adventures in the United States, arrived in a small barrio of Bugwak, part of the former District of Saug, now the municipality of Asuncion, (Barrio Bugwak is now the barrio of New Bohol) to seek for lands they hope to till and cultivate as their own.

Not satisfied of the terrain and location of the lands around Bugwak which are hilly, these Boholanos moved on a little farther north. Utilizing the native Mangguwangans and Mandayans as their guide, they arrived at Mopia plain wherein they were amazed and attracted of the potentialities and rich resources for irrigation. To develop the place, the Boholanos took the opportunity of occupying and tilling their respective claimed land areas.

The plain became the haven of the second, third and fourth wave of Boholano settlers and after a year, the barrio of New Corella was born, a name given after their hometown at Corella, Bohol. The barrio being fully established, became the fourth barrio created within the eastern part of the vast Saug district territory.

Like any other places, New Corella has a mythical story that every Corellans are proud to tell and cherish.

Year after year, different tribes like Leyteño, Ilonggo, Ilocano, Cebuano and many others begun to thrive in the said plain with farming as their main source of livelihood.

As a municipality, New Corella was formerly a barangay of her mother town Asuncion. It was once created through a Presidential Proclamation in 1964 and was fully established in 1965 after the first set of municipal officials duly sworn in to Pres. Diosdado Macapagal in Manila.

Appointed as first Municipal Mayor was Hon. Prospero S. Amatong who held office only for eleven (11) months because after the election in 1965, the supreme court declared its creation as illegal and unconstitutional. Thus, in 1966 Cong. Lorenzo S. Sarmiento filed a house bill no. 394 creating New Corella into a municipality. This was enacted and approved on June 18, 1967 through R.A. No. 4747. From this beginning, marked the rebirth of New Corella as a municipality.

The first elected mayor of the town was Hon. Arcadio E. Omega. He served the municipality from 1968 to 1971. It was during his incumbency where development programs and projects were first introduced and implemented. In other words, he pioneered the development of the town. His worth and capabilities were proven when he was re-elected as the Chief Executive and served the town from 1972 to 1980. For this, he was able to continue the plans for the development of the municipality.

The second chief executive of the town was Hon. Miguel C. Darunday and he was elected in January 1980. He served the people of New Corella as Mayor from February 1980 to March 1986. When her Excellency Corazon C. Aquino took over the Presidency by virtue of "People's Power" during the EDSA revolution on February 1986, Hon. Miguel C. Darunday was replaced by Vice Mayor Daniel B. Turan. He served as the OIC/Municipality Mayor of New Corella from April 1986 to 1987. He was elected as mayor when he ran for the post in 1988. During his term, infrastructure project such as public market and public  terminal were conducted. Because of his honest and devoted leader of the town, he was able to implement programs and projects for the upliftment of the living/economic condition of the populace, particularly projects that supports agricultural productivity.

Four years is not enough for him to make his dream come true for the betterment of the people of New Corella since various projects were left unfinished, so it was for this reason that he ran for a re-election on May 11, 1992. Luckily, he was re-elected by a majority votes and he was re-elected again last May 1995 election.

New Corella  comprises twenty (20) barangays. The biggest one is Poblacion with 8,128 people and the smallest barangay is Patroceño with 550 people.

New Corella falls under the fourth (4th) class level having an average annual income of P2.0 Million taken from realty taxes and other revenues derived from small and medium scale industries.

Basically, New Corella is an agricultural one having an area of 21,605.04 hectares or 67.20% devoted to agricultural activities. Livestock and poultry raising are backyard in scale. It likewise constitute a vital economic  activity.

When he found a fertile land suited for farming , he invited more to join them. There are more  Corellahanon in Davao that those left in Bohol. We populated and built a new town in Davao called New Corella, a fast growing and progressive community. Many Corelahanon owns big tracks of land in New Corella and other neighboring municipalities. Its because we are hardworking with strong vision and determination in life.

One of my kababayan from Balilihan asked me about iced rain in Corella last Oct. 2007. Yes it was true. My sister in Canangcaan told  that the day was cloudy. They observed  stones falling on the roof. After two minutes, the  ice melted and falled down as if there was a heavy rain. People staying outdoor saw the ice were as big as a gmelina fruit. It was observed in the whole barangay of Canangcaan and other neighboring barangays. I beleived , it was  the effect of global warming.

The Philippine Tarsier Foundation in Canapnapan, Corella is located in a 7.4 hectare of sanctuary or forest reservation. Visitors can see tarsiers in its natural habitat. This promotes tourism in Corella and the province of Bohol. When I was still young, I caught a full-grown tarsier. I placed  it in a bamboo cage. The animal smashed its head on the wall of the cage in a bid to escape until its skull cracked and died. Therefore, this animal can not be raised  as pet. Before, this animals were mainly hunted  to be made into stuffed toys for  decor. The first man who successfully bread this animal in captivity was
Carlito Pizarras known as "tarsier man", the first man of Corella recorded in the National Geographic.
We invite you to see the Philippine tarsier in Corella .

               For all day long
It sleeps on a branch of a tree.
               And when the night comes
               It hunts and eats  prey.

Corella is gradually changing to restore back farming. Many were able to harvest palay last cropping because of  affordable rain. Some started plowing for corn and other root crops. It was observed in the previous years that there were many idle lands and rice field because of abnormal weather condition. It was observed that there was  rain throughout the year. I believe this is the effects of reforestation. Many were planting trees like gmelinas, mahogany and fruits trees.  Corella is turning to be a man made forest.
