Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI) called an emergency press conference on Friday to announce a voluntary safety recall of its subcompact vehicle models Jazz and City, explaining that small engine components in the models could create problems and potentially stall their engine.

Voltaire T. Gonzales, vehicle sales and corporate communication head, disclosed that four pieces of the lost-motion-spring retainers in the cylinder head of the 1.5-liter Honda Jazz (distributed from September 2008 to April 2010) and the 1.5-liter Honda City (distributed from January 2009 to April 2010) had to be replaced right away.

The recall targets 5,468 units of both models distributed at the time.

Measuring less than an inch and looking like the head of a nail with a spring body, two samples of the lost-motion-spring retainers—one with a shiny head and another with a rough surface—were shown at the press conference.

HCPI explained that the one with the rough surface had to be replaced by the one with the shiny head.

It said that high surface pressure between the wrong lost-motion-spring retainers and rocker arm slippers could result in increased retainer movement, which would then lead to spring breakage. The broken spring could then come into contact with other moving parts within the cylinder head, initially produce noise, and at the worst, cause the engine to stall.

The Honda Jazz subject of recall was imported from Thailand, while the City is a complete knock-down unit assembled in the Philippines.
