from the Bohol StandardThe prospect of electric power generated by windmills has stirred the imagination of many as such power source has been proven possible in some parts of the country.
Two months ago, upon the invitation of Atty. Silvino Cinches, now kagawad-elect of Dauis town, Department of Energy engineers surveyed the areas of Biking and Catarman and found strong gust of winds that could sustain windmill-powered electric sources.
The official assessment of the DOE technicians is expected to be released anytime this month.
The team came to Bohol upon the request of Cinches, a former National of Bureau of Investigation director who earlier wrote to the PNOC-Energy Development Corporation for a possible consideration of a windmill-propelled power source for the island.
DOE Visayas Field Officer Engr. Magdaleno Baclay Jr. said the initial wind measurement showed an ideal 5.6 per seconds wind speed at 30 minutes height that can be generated in the island of Panglao.
After the evaluation, a wind measurement station will be established to determine the yea-round wind speed in the area.
Another windmill project, the 25MW Bangui Bay Windmills in Burgos, Ilocos Norte is now operating. The plant costing $2-M initial investment is the largest in the whole Southeast Asia and was funded by a grant from Netherlands.
Being surrounded by open seas, the windmill-powered source can deliver energy to at least the two island- municipalities, Dauis and Panglao.
One megawatt of wind-powered energy (electricity from wind-powered turbines) can supply the power needs of 2,000 households at the average consumption of 10 kilowatts.
Panglao Island is a tourism hub and the prime destination in this part of the country.
The island host numerous resorts, high-end travel and diving sites and will soon be complemented with a new airport with international standards costing P4.2 billion eyed to be completed before 2010.
