VM Veloso saves city from Sen. Zubiri’s fund exclusion
By: ven rebo arigo

ACTING Mayor Jose Antonio “Toto” Veloso and two councilors saved Tagbilaran City from exclusion from the P50 million windfall that Sen. Miguel “Migz” Zubiri announced last Saturday to be distributed to the provincial government and 47 towns in Bohol.

Their representation secured for city hall P2 million from the Mindanao senator who announced in the Grand Cooperative Gathering at the Bohol Cultural Center to give P3 million to the provincial government and P1 million to each of the 47 towns.

For unknown reason, Zubiri did not mention Tagbilaran City in his speech there.

Vice Mayor Veloso, who has acted as mayor since the other Friday on account of Mayor Dan Lim’s travel abroad, and Councilors Edgar Kapirig and Bebiano Inting thus dashed to the Metro Centre where the senator met with the local press after his applauded appearance at the cultural center.

There, Kapirig and Inting of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) cooperative committee joined Zubiri, Cooperative Development Authority Chairperson Lecira Juarez and the cooperative leaders in Bohol in discussing the proposed amendments to Republic Act 6938, otherwise known as the Cooperative Code of the Philippines. Zubiri chairs the Senate cooperative committee

The acting mayor, members of the SP and other city officials already scheduled in the morning of the same day a clean-up at the Mabaw Reef, which is declared a marine sanctuary and eco-tourism seawater, off Ubujan and Taloto.

From Metro Centre, Veloso joined Zubiri, his lovely wife Aubrey, Gov. Erico Aumentado and other local officials in a dinner at the governor’s residence.

City hall has yet to identify the projects to be funded out of Zubiri’s P2 million, which now forms part of the senator’s P52 million total reward (including the P1 million for each of 47 towns and P3 million for capitol) for placing fourth in Bohol in the May 14 election for senators.

While many attributed the “sudden inclusion” of P2 million for the city in the senator’s “payback package” for Bohol to the representation of Veloso bolstered by the presence of the two councilors, sources revealed, however, that Zubiri is also a close friend of the vice mayor’s brother named Dominic.

Veloso’s brother-in-law himself, Rep. Edgar Chatto, and Zubiri have been close peers in Congress since the senator’s stint then in the Lower House as a congressman from Bukidnon.

Apart from securing P2 million from Zubiri, Veloso, still as acting mayor, separately met with the city department heads and the Association of Barangay Councils on various concerns, graced the turnover of the barangay covered court at Mansasa funded by Chatto, and led in the city’s observance of the 16th anniversary of the Local Government Code with a thanksgiving mass at the city hall atrium, followed by People’s Day activities that included the monitoring of the blood pressure of the employees.

Tomorrow, Veloso will join Department of Health Regional Director Susana Madarieta and Gov. Erico Aumentado in launching the door-to-door measles elimination drive dubbed the “Knock Out Tigdas” at the city hall atrium.
