The Mysterious Deaths of 8 Residents of Antequera, Boholby the Bohol Chronicle
Eight residents of Antequera town died in a span of 2.5 years while people traced their mysterious deaths to their eating of freshwater eel locally called as "kasili" taken from a creek in a very secluded sitio in barangay Bantolinao, this interior town.
Antequera Mayor Cecil Rebosura told the Chronicle that she requested health authorities to look into the medical reason behind their deaths while many barrio folks suspect that the eight perished after the first victim identified as Antonio Aguilor, 70, fished an unusually 3-meter long giant "kasili" sometime in 2006.
Antonio's stomach bulged while he turned pale and yellowish until he died.
The same descriptions were given to the other fatalities who died one after the other, namely: Ricardo and his wife, Rebecca Aguilor, Jose Masibay, 60; his brother-in-law- Jose, 48, Rosalina Bastasa, 55, Emilio Samoya, 46 and Roland Aguilor, 27.
The latest victim, Roland is the grandson of Antonio whose eldest son Ricardo was the second fatality. Roland died last month even after undergoing medical checkup in Cebu City.
Bantolinaw Barangay Captain Pilotio Pana said that the death of the eight remains a mystery. Reports also said that old timers in the barangay cited deaths sometime in the late 40s, indicating deaths in succession in the same area where the creek is situated.
The creek with a huge stone in the middle was where the late Antonio fished out the giant "kasili". Commonly, this type of freshwater eel is less than a meter long.
