A suspect in the rape and murder of a public school teacher in Malita, Davao del Sur surrendered to the Talomo Police Precinct in Davao City yesterday afternoon.
Superintendent Rey Cuevas, chief of police of Malita Police Station, told radio station dxDC-RMN Davao that Benjie Baguio admitted to Talomo police having raped and killed Kim Ann Lee, a 23-year-old teacher at Lagumit Elementary School in Barangay Lagumit, Malita, Davao del Sur.
Cuevas said based on their investigation, Lee had gone home to her residence in Malita Poblacion after class on July 16, 2010.
After dinner, she decided to go out. That was the last time she was seen alive.
The victim’s decomposing body was uncovered three days later on July 19 in Barangay Lawis, Malita, Davao del Sur.
Cuevas said the victim was naked and believed strangled to death using her underwear.
Cuevas said they pinpointed Baguio as the assailant in a follow-up investigation and conducted a manhunt against him.
Baguio, however, managed to flee before the police could reach his home.
Cuevas said he believes Baguio, whose wife is also a public school teacher, was also a suspect in the rape and murder of a woman in Malita in October 2009. The victim in that case was also strangled to death using her underwear.
As of press time, Baguio was still detained at the Talomo Police Precinct as Cuevas vowed to dig deeper in their investigation to determine if there was a connection among the series of rapes and murders that have happened in Malita since 2009.
He said another case had happened in September 2009.
