Fair weather as ‘Nando’ exits
Philippine Daily Inquirer
6:10 am | Thursday, August 29th, 2013

MTSAT ENHANCED-IR Satellite Image 5:32 a.m., 29 August 2013

MANILA, Philippines—Fair weather is expected to prevail over the entire country beginning Thursday as tropical storm “Nando” finally exits Philippine territory after almost a week, the weather bureau said on Wednesday.

The storm (international name Kong-Rey) had already passed Batanes Wednesday but the area was still experiencing stormy weather as Nando moved toward Okinawa, said chief forecaster Rene Paciente at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Thus, public storm signal No. 2, indicating 61 to 100 kilometer per hour winds, was still up over the Batanes group, and storm signal No. 1, indicating 45-60 kph winds, over the Calayan and Babuyan group.

Forecaster says Mindanao should learn to prepare for extreme weather

By DJ Yap
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

MANILA—Just as Metro Manila residents are learning to brace themselves for storms, it’s time now for residents of Mindanao to follow suit, a top weather forecaster said.

Rene Paciente, chief of the weather forecasting section of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said Mindanao residents must learn to anticipate extreme weather events and take lessons from the destruction of Storm “Sendong” in 2011 and Typhoon “Pablo” in 2012.

“We have seen how Metro Manila is now more prepared than before,” he said, citing the storm-enhanced monsoon episode in August in which relatively fewer people were affected, compared to Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009 and the monsoon rains of 2012.

“In fact, only one person directly died from the storm,” Paciente said.

He said the people of Mindanao, a place not typically on the path of cyclones, must also embrace the same level of disaster preparedness and prepare for the unexpected.

But Paciente clarified that he did not believe a strong storm would hit Mindanao for a third December in a row (both Sendong and Pablo struck in December).

“It used to be that storms hit Mindanao every 10 years. So when Sendong hit, that was not really unusual. What was unusual was when another strong typhoon hit the following year, and that was Pablo,” he said.

“That might well have been a fluke. We cannot conclude as of now that Mindanao is now going to be on the regular receiving end of storms,” he said in an interview.

Tropical storm skirts PH, heads for Japan, but brings rain to Luzon, Visayas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:10 am | Monday, September 16th, 2013

MTSAT ENHANCED-IR Satellite Image 2 a.m., 16 September 2013

MANILA, Philippines—Tropical Storm “Man-Yi” is heading for Japan but is expected to continue to enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat) and bring moderate to heavy rains over portions of Luzon and the Visayas on Monday.

The weather bureau alerted residents of Metro Manila as well as Central and southern Luzon to possible flash floods and landslides that may be triggered by the rains.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) is tracking a low pressure area (LPA) east of Luzon.
The LPA was monitored at 4 p.m. Sunday to be 1,010 kms east of Luzon. “Based on our assessment, it could develop into a tropical depression as long as it remains over the Pacific Ocean,” forecaster Buddy Javier said, adding that the LPA was not anticipated to intensify into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.

The weather agency said the current rainy weather was due to storm Man-Yi, which skirted the Philippine area of responsibility.—Jeannette I. Andrade

That's all for this morning, kaberks! Have a pleasant, resentment-free Monday!

Tropical Depression Odette continued its westward movement and inched closer to Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province early Tuesday, state weather forecasters said.

PAGASA, in its 5 a.m. bulletin, said Odette was estimated 830 km east of Tuguegarao City as of 4 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph.

Tropical Depression Odette is forecast to move west at 7 kph, even as the southwest monsoon is affecting Central and Southern Luzon and Visayas.

PAGASA said Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas may expect "cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms."

Mindanao will be "partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms."

Moderate to strong winds from the southwest to south will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest to south with slight to moderate seas, it said. — DVM, GMA News

Hi folks! Ondoy Tagatigbotoy here to bring you the latest rains, er, weather update:

'Odette' will stay within Philippines until Saturday
By: Jaime Sinapit, InterAksyon.com
September 17, 2013 8:43 AM

MANILA - Tropical depression Odette will stay inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) until Saturday, the state-run weather bureau said on Tuesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), meantime, is tracking a new weather disturbance outside PAR.

While inside PAR, Odette has enhanced the southwest monsoon to bring more rains to Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas.

In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin, Pagasa said that as of 4 a.m. the center of the cyclone was estimated at 830 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City (17.9ºN,130.7ºE).

Odette is carrying maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour.

“It is forecast to move west at 7 kph,” Pagasa said.

“Metro Manila and the rest of the Luzon and Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms,” it added.

mora man ug padung na pod magbaha ang manila, with the way the rains are going here.  still i hope not.  daghan na kaayog problema ning atong capital city ambot ba uroy.

mahibalik na sad atong buot aning pork barrel.  kung gigamit pa lang tong kwartaha para flood controls, di unta ning very disorganized metropolis mag-antos ug baha.

bai tigs, kumusta na man tawon ang españa boulevard of broken dreams, street of shattered schemes?

Madam CJ, mas sapoton ka kay ang US nagdonate ug $26 million para sa biktima sa Zamboanga crisis.. ang ending, gipanggutom mga tao, naghuot sa evacuation centers..

aguy.  nahatag na ba kaha, and how?  that's no mean amount.  daghan kaayog offices ug kamot maagian anang kwartaha before it trickles down.  on the other hand, basin ug news release ra poy nag-una.

mahinumdom man lang ko ani from way, way back nga kanang donations in kind from foreign countries during our calamities di na maghitsura pag-abot sa intended beneficiaries.  ang canned corned beef and bacon nahimong ligo sardines pag-abot sa beneficiaries.  kuno.
