'Ofel' makes landfall in Surigao del NorteMANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm “Ofel†has made landfall in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
PAGASA weather specialist Raymond Ordinario said “Ofel†made landfall at around 9 a.m., and has speeded up, but is expected to slow down again in the next days.
In its 11 a.m. update, PAGASA said “Ofel†was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.
“Ofel†is expected to be in the vicinity of Roxas City by tomorrow morning, and at 180 km west of Nasugbu, Batangas by Friday morning. It is predicted to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday morning, when it will already be 640 km west of Manila.
Public storm warning signal no. 2 has been declared over the following areas:
Bohol
Cebu, including Camotes Island
Leyte Provinces
Dinagat Island
Surigao del Norte
Surigao del Sur
Agusan del Norte
Northern part of Agusan del Sur
Camiguin Island
Public storm warning signal no. 1, meanwhile, was hoisted over the following areas:
Masbate
Romblon
Northern Samar
Eastern Samar
Western Samar
Biliran
Capiz
Antique
Aklan including Boracay Island
Iloilo
Guimaras Island
Negros Oriental
Negros Occidental
Siquijor Island
Misamis Oriental
The rest of Agusan del Sur
Northern part of Bukidnon
PAGASA said that the estimated rainfall amount due to “Ofel†is 5-20 millimeters per hour.
The tropical storm is also being affected by the “hanging amihan†or northeast monsoon.
“Hindi lang concentrated sa circulation niya (Ofel) ang pag-ulan,†PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando said in a press briefing. Thus, Bicol and southern Luzon will also experience rain showers.
The weather bureau warned those living in low-lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal nos. 1 and 2 to be on alert against possible floods and landslides.
Coastal areas under signal no. 2 are likewise warned of possible storm surges.
Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of southern Luzon, seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.
Servando said that after “Ofelâ€, there are currently no nearby weather systems which may become storms. However, they also expect that other storms may form until December. – with reports from DZMM
