Seares: Some popes whose ring you would not kiss

“Authoritative as a pope may be by his office, he is not impeccable as a man--he can sin, as can all humans.”

-- Garry Wills, “Papal Sin: Structures of Deceit”

MANY Catholics, mostly the young, have taken for granted that all popes were molded like John Paul II, Benedict XVI, or Francis.

John Paul (1978 to 2005) was “moral voice of our time.” Benedict (2005 to 2013) was “courageous prophet of peace.” And Pope Francis has embraced tenets of poverty and
simplicity.a

Not all past popes were poster guys of virtue and good deeds.

Pope Julius II had syphilis, threw orgies, and sired a child with his sister. Alex VI held a “Joust of the Whores” in which 50 women sat and naked at his dinner table. A number of popes were known for corruption, extravagance, child abuse, incest, rape, adultery, or homosexuality (one slept with a male ambassador to the Vatican).

Those were the times:

--When power and wealth of the church rested on one man, with no stiff rules to choose Christ’s vicar or how he’d govern.

--When church members had no means of redress and were cowed by threat of hell.

--When church power encroached on government, with no force outside Vatican to temper its might: intimidated press and awed lay groups; no leaks and no pesky social media to shake the pope.

Good fortune

Most young Catholics aren’t aware of past excesses. Catechism classes didn’t include Vatican scandals.

Reading about past papal sins, younger Catholics should appreciate their fortune and blessing in having Pope Francis as church leader.

Yes, popes are infallible at any aspects.

Why delve back in the past some 4-5 centuries in the past? The Church marches forward ! These are different times.

No one claims to be perfect , especially not one Holy Father was free of sin. The beauty of it is this: despite human frailty , the priests of God continually proclaim the gospel unto the world. The priests , bishops, cardinals and popes continue the salvific mission of the Church.

They vivify the words from scripture:

Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.

Colossians 1:24

time was when popes had temporal powers and were thus selected with much interference and influence of european royalty and politics.  the author pachico "chiking" seares didn't bother to explain the time and place of such irreverence.

i can say though that i know the background of chiking seares, he who made the sunstar newspaper what it is.  this piece of his is no surprise.  i still have to read him praising anyone, though i won't discount articles of those he favors politically.  talk of objectivity...

in the same way perhaps that other religions wouldn't teach their young adherents about their own bloody past and how their religions came to be.  out of curiosity, do anglican religious teachings dwell on the reason behind the church of england's henry VIII?
