Protect Danajon Double Barrier Reef

Philippine Information Agency

An event of historical significance took place today when four (4) governors of Central and Eastern Visayas signed a Memorandum of Agreement  (MOA) to jointly protect, preserve and manage the Danajon Double Barrier Reef, the only documented barrier reef in the country and in the Southeast Asia region.

Governors Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu (Ce),  Carlos Jericho Petilla of Leyte (Le),  Erico Aumentado of Bohol (Bo) and Damian Mercado of Southern Leyte (SoLe) led their respective delegation of mayors, regional directors of national government agencies and representatives of non-government organizations during the CeLeBoSoLe Growth Quadrangle Convention on Poverty, Population and Environment held at the Bohol Tropics Resort.

Located off northern Bohol and surrounded by the provinces of Cebu, Leyte and Southern Leyte, the 272- square kilometer Danajon Bank has a high degree of diversity in its marine flora and fauna and includes Southeast Asia’s largest man-made mangrove forest in Banacon Island off the shores of Getafe town in Bohol. It stretches across sixteen (16) municipalities and two (2) cities in the four (4) Visayas provinces. Cebu, Bohol and Leyte provinces belong to the so-called “Millionaires’ Club” in terms of population.

Over the years, the condition of Danajon Bank has become alarming due to extremely high fishing pressure, rapid population increase in the coastal towns around it and ineffective coastal resource management programs and policies.

The signing of the MOA automatically created the CeLeBoSoLe Council and Technical Working Group both of which is an inter-regional, multi-province and multi-agency body.

The agreement aims to address the issues and concerns affecting food security, poverty reduction, over population, maintenance of the biodiversity of Danajon Bank Barrier Reef, as well as enforcement and litigation of fishery laws through a participatory and convergence approach from among all the stakeholders of this rare natural asset.

It's good to know officials are paying attention to our natural resources like this one. I wish them success.

But it is also one of the site for oil exploration, consented by these governors. With this MOA, those three governors must also say NO to oil drilling which is scheduled this year.

There is a lot of potential hazzard to these reef incase of oil leakage or tanker accident.

It looks to me that these three governors are wearing a smiling face to hide a bad intention. Stop wearing two faces!

you got a point Mr. Ferniz.I think you're very cautious.
But look at the bright side, I would think whoever will do this will take extra measure not to have accidents, although we can't be sure but still if somehow they will see oil deposits in it, I would think it will be a huge oil resource, would that be something!
It's better to try than not do anything at all. Who knows di ba.

One year ago SP member gave me the challenge to come up with research regarding this double barrier reef and its illegal fishing problems and what not including it vast over population per square hecter along the coastal towns that border around the barrier.

Cty administrators representing Lapu Lapu city refussed to sign the MOA in an interveiw with this witer they said detalis are not accurate and that 11 other towns should also be included and that no municipal owns rights to any coastal body of water.

It was also rumored not all governors had fully decided to sign the MOA bf most persons had to leave and go back home to theyre repectfull provinces.
