INVESTIGATORS in Central Visayas have narrowed down its inquiry into Friday night's shooting of a militant leader in Bohol with the identification of the alleged gunman.

Philippine National Police (PNP) deputy director for investigative and detective management Geary Barias, who is also Task Force Usig commander, reported this to PNP Chief Oscar Calderon.

Reports said Mario "Mayong" Auxillo, a provincial leader of the party-list organization Bayan Muna succumbed to gunshot wounds at 10:05 a.m. Sunday at the Governor Celestino Gallares Hospital in Tagbilaran City.

Auxillo suffered two gunshot wounds in the head and in the arm when an assailant opened fire at him shortly before midnight last Friday whiled he was in the vicinity of the public market in Bien Unido town.

Citing reports from Senior Superintendent Arturo Evangelista, Chief of the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-7, Barias said two more witnesses have corroborated an earlier statement by the victim's female companion at time of the shooting and identified a certain Larry Diola as the gunman.

Diola, a resident of Poblacion Bien Unido, has since been in at-large and is now the subject of region-wide manhunt launched by PRO-7 intelligence operatives backed by the regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Intelligence Group (IG) units.

Two more witnesses, including a barangay councilman, are set to be invited by the police to establish Diola's motive for killing Auxillo. "Based on interviews with some residents, it was gathered that Diola and Auxillo figured in a heated altercation on Friday afternoon at the Bien Unido public market, hours before the victim was shot," Barias said.
