Phivolcs ups alert level over restive Kanlaon volcano

November 24, 2015 6:28 pm

The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) declared alert level 1 over Kanlaon volcano after its eruption Monday night.

A steam explosion occurred at its crater at 9:55 p.m. and lasted for eight minutes, Phivolcs said. The volcano continued to emit ash from the summit Tuesday morning.

“Only four (4) volcanic earthquakes had been recorded during the past week by the Kanlaon Network, but after the explosion, the network recorded volcanic tremor that lasted for five hours,” the agency added.

The explosion was heard in Sitio Mananawin and Sitio Upper Pantao, Brgy. Pula, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

Alert Level 1 means that a volcano is at an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest. During this alert level, local government units and the public are prohibited to enter the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because of possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Pilots are also advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit.
