PH economist downplays Trump’s BPO threatFelipe Medalla, a member of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Monetary Board, expressed doubt on Trumps protectionist policies negatively affecting the BPO industry in the country. Medalla, a former socio-economic planning secretary, even doubts that Trump can actually push some of his protectionist policies. He also downplayed the border adjustment tax being pushed by Republicans as a way to boost exports. Medalla added a border adjustment tax could cause the appreciation of the dollar, which in turn would make outsourcing more attractive. Analysts earlier said that Trump’s protectionist policies could severely affect the operation of BPO companies in the Philippines.
