Mexico Swine Flu Deaths Spark Concerns of Global Epidemic
« on: April 25, 2009, 10:56:38 PM »
Authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital, Mexico City, to try to contain any possible outbreak. Many people in the capital were wearing face masks while in public. Authorities say 1,000 people have become ill.
Scientists have long been concerned that a new flu virus could spark a worldwide pandemic. A pandemic is usually declared when there is a new virus to which few people have resistance, the virus is easily transmissible and sustainable within a population, and causes severe illness.

The order of the day should be surgical masks, minimization of direct hand to hand contact and extreme attention to personal hygiene.
Hand washing should become a regular event. Take care folks, I have read that Queens,NY has 300 cases at this time.

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza that regularly cause outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans, however, human infections with swine flu do occur, and cases of human-to-human spread of swine flu viruses has been documented. See General Information about Swine Flu.

From December 2005 through February 2009, a total of 12 human infections with swine influenza were reported from 10 states in the United States. Since March 2009, a number of confirmed human cases of a new strain of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in California, Texas, and Mexico have been identified. An investigation into these cases is ongoing. For more information see Human Swine Flu Investigation.

Swine flu Cases In California Worry Health Officials

April 23, 2009

Health officials alerted doctors Tuesday to a unique type of swine flu diagnosed in two California children, but it’s unclear whether many people will be susceptible to the infection. The children were diagnosed last week. One was a 10-year-old boy in San Diego County, and the other a 9-year-old girl in neighboring Imperial County. Both recovered.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said there’s no reason for the public to take unusual measures against it.

“CDC is concerned, but that’s our job,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.

Health officials have long feared the emergence of a deadly form of flu. They have not noted a spike in flu cases or a rash of severe illnesses. But they are continuing to investigate the genetics of the virus and track down and test people who may have been in contact with the children.

ps
German hospitals are getting prepared if the flu really turns pandemic, quarantine areas are ready to be used.

It is a reflection of the hindered medical practice set in place in Mexico.

The United States has offered medical care, yet at the same time, it is imperative we secure our border to prevent the proliferation of this to our southern states. To the impediment of the United States.

something interesting and worrying that I just read:
Quote
You want tinfoil, here you go:

The first case was seen in Mexico on April 13. The outbreak coincided with the President Barack Obama’s trip to Mexico City on April 16. Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archeologist who died the following day from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn’t confirm if Solis had swine flu or not.

Now, if the first case was only seen on the 13th, what are the chances that in a city of 20 million, the man who was scheduled to receive Obama was sickened with flu and died literally a week before the first swine flu deaths were even recorded?

Don't expect to get a straight answer from the coroner either, as the Mexican health minister has already chimed in with the official position: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1173672/Obamas-swine-flu-scare-shaking-hands-archaeologist-died-24-hours-later.html

Mexican health boss Jose Cordova, however, said Mr Solis was already ill and his death was unrelated to swine flu.

Hmm, so he was already sick with an as yet undisclosed "flu-like illness" which he died from on the very next day after meeting with Obama, but that didn't stop this meeting from taking place due to, oh I don't know, perhaps the fact that he was either contagious or deathly ill or both?

Keep in mind, this swine flu has a 24-48 hour incubation period, which is just about enough time for you to say "Buenos dias, Sr. Presidente" and drop dead before you could twitter the event.

So I smell b***. I smell an attempt to:

    *      Possibly assassinate a sitting president in a way that looks otherwise.
    *      Eliminate war crimes prosecution from the public mind.
    *      Arouse widespread fear and panic, which can always be harnessed by those seeking greater control.

Questions such as "What should I do to keep from getting the flu?" and others are answered at the http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ website. CDC recommends, first and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not to touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

The swine flu virus is not spread through food.
People cannot become infected with swine flu
by eating pork or pork products.
This current virus is different. Scientists believe
the germ is a mixture of swine flu, bird flu and
human flu- and it is spreading between people
The swine flu has killed more than 80 people in
Mexico and has infected at least 20 people in
the United States. While the seasonal flu is most
dangerous for infants and the elderly, most of the
swine flu deaths have been among healthy adults.
The United States of America has declared a
"State of Emergency" as they worry about the
swine flu that it might be the same big flu epidemic
that killed at least 40 million people worldwide in
1918 that struck healthy young adults.
Some viruses can live for several hours in surfaces
like table, doorkobs and telephone. This may be
true for the swine flu, so some people may be
getting sick by touching something contaminated
by swine flu virus- and then touching their eyes,
noses or mouths.
People with swine flu remain infected for at least
a week after they become sick. But, keep in mind,
many people recover from the swine flu without
treatment.
It's important to pay attention to ongoing reports
about the swine flu. Viruses are smart little germs
and can "mutate" or change as time goes on. If
this happens, the virus may become more or less
dangerous. So far the CDC has been unable to
predict how the swine flu might change.
Currently there's no vaccine available that protects
against the swine flu. However, some basic health
habits and recommendation I have posted earlier
about the seasonal flu.
So far, it seems that the swine flu is spreading the
same way that the seasonal flu does- mainly through
droplets that float through the air when infected people
cough or sneeze.
It is possible for an infected person with swine flu
to spread the virus to other s beginning 24 hours
BEFORE symptoms show up. This means  that you
may have contact with a person with swine flu who
seem to appear perfectly healthy. And it means that
you could spread the virus before you know you have it.

Now that its EU neighbors have reported cases of swine flu, Germany is taking measures at airports, but its stockpile of anti-virals is low. Baffling scientists, the new viral strain has only been deadly in Mexico.

Hofelina, how do you think this would affect the Philippines?  On the downside there is a lot of international travel.  On the upside, small islands could be quarantined.

Sorry Ben I have no idea, what makes me nervous is that if this really be a serious epidemic, the medications and bills are unreachable for the poor. They are vurnerable since they are under/malnourished, and they live in unhygienic areas. Looy labina ang mga bata.
