Police are looking into the motive of why an entire household in barangay Magkaya, Buenavista town was the object of annihilation Thursday evening by an unknown assailant. A grenade was lobbed to the house owned by couple Cosme and Emilia Peryandi killing one while two others survived the assault. Magkaya is a mountain barangay in Buenavista.
The incident which the local media tagged as the Buenavista massacre claimed the life of a three-old boy identified as Joshua Swete. He was the grandson of the Peryandis.
The fatality’s grandparents also suffered wounds in the different parts of their bodies and they are now recuperating at the Gov. Gallares Memorial Hospital.
The mother of the victim who was cooking in the ground floor of the Peryandi household escaped unhurt.
Her husband was in another barangay working as a farm hand.
According to the victim’s mother, she noticed the smell of gasoline after the grenade exploded.
She also saw her bloodied parents, Cosme and Emilia Peryandi.
The lone fatality was the son of Elenar and Judith Swete. The Swete couple visited their parents in barangay Magkaya when the incident happened.
In an interview with Senior Supt. Edgardo Ingking, provincial police director, he said they are looking into the motive of the aborted massacre. Police also are checking reports regarding the background of the Peryandis who are not natives of the place. Before they migrated to Buenavista, they lived in Asturias, Cebu.
In a check with Lt. Col. Alfredo Sanchez, commander of the 2nd Special Forces Battalion, he brushed aside suspicions that the grenade attack was insurgency related.
