Alvarez caught in the act

AN ASPIRING politician has filed a complaint before the Makati City Police after finding his wife in bed with a former popular basketball star early inside their house in Magallanes Village Thursday morning.
Paul "Bong" Alvarez, 35, known as Mr. Excitement in Philippine basketball, may soon be facing charges of adultery after the husband of his alleged lover, Sarah Lopez, 23, caught them "naked in bed."
Alvarez, however, denied having an affair with Sarah.
But according to Alfred Lopez, 26, of No. 28 Homonhon St., Barangay Magallanes, Makati City, he immediately recognized the basketball player when he checked on his wife upon arriving home with two friends around 4:30 a.m.
Lopez, who said he is a nephew of former Manila mayor Mel Lopez, said he came from a political meeting in Sampaloc, Manila, in preparation for the 2004 elections. He added that he has earlier declared his intention to run as a councilor in Manila's fourth district.
Lopez said that when he went to the master bedroom, he found his wife and Alvarez.
Lopez said his wife immediately slammed the door and poked a kitchen knife at him when he managed to pry the door open.
Lopez said Sarah accidentally stabbed one of his friends, Bernard Robles, on the left wrist while Robles was pacifying the couple.
Lopez added that when he saw his two children -- Alyssa, 4, and Brandon, 3 -- looking down at the ruckus from the second floor of the house, he decided to call the village security guard and wait outside.
But Lopez said Sarah and Alvarez managed to sneak inside the Lopezes' blue Ford Expedition (CPD-481), and escaped by crashing into the village guard's L-300 van parked outside the gate.
Lopez added that Alvarez left his silver Honda CRV (XKY-288) behind when the suspects took off with the two Lopez children.
Lopez, who owns a bar in Makati, said he has heard talks about the affair going on between Alvarez and his wife three months ago.
"But I decided to ignore the rumors because I trusted my wife and I was preoccupied with my business," Lopez told reporters.
Through his agent Danny Espiritu, Alvarez told the Inquirer in a phone interview that he and Sarah came from a party the other night.
He explained that when they reached Quiapo, he asked a friend, Bong Aragon, to take a drunk Sarah home using his vehicle.
Alvarez said he stayed at a friend's house in Quiapo while waiting for Aragon to return.
Alvarez said his family, especially wife Almira Muhlach, is also hurting because of the accusation.
"Sarah also told Bong (Alvarez) that she and her husband have been living apart in the last six months," Espiritu said.
Alvarez also said that Lopez damaged his Honda CRV out of rage.
