www.theboholstandard.comLike rice bugs that already hit the province but contained, lethal coconut bugs or Brontista Longissima threatened the precarious coconut industry here when they started to destroy several coco trees in the municipality of Baclayon, said Philippine Coconut Industry Bohol field office.
Reports reaching the Chronicle bared that some 200 fully grown coconut trees in barangay Cambanac of this town have been found positive of the bug infestation.
This prompted PCA Bohol officer-in-charge Timoteo Lago, Jr. to dispatch last week his personnel and technicians to look into the presence of the bugs.
PCA has been launching massive campaign informing the farmers of the deadly pest and urging them in the barangays to report any presence of unusual bugs or pests that might plague the trees. And their campaign paid off when Baclayon folk responded positively.
PCA explained that it has to treat immediately and apply appropriate pesticides using an syringe-like instrument injecting the pesticide to the trunk of every tree affected by the bug.
If the infested coconut trees won’t be treated right away, they will just die down within six months, PCA said.
It was learned that some municipalities have passed legislative measures strictly prohibiting the bringing coconut specimen from other provinces without pertinent papers. Those found doing so are meted with penalties.
