Lawyer out on bail for “illegal drugs” shot dead in Dumaguete in broad daylight

DUMAGUETE CITY, June 3 (PNA) -- A lawyer was shot and killed Friday morning by riding in tandem suspects in Sitio Laguna, Barangay Looc in Dumaguete City.

The acting Dumaguete chief of police, Supt. Jovito Atanacio identified the victim as Atty. Rex Agan Perewperew, 38 years old with known address at Sta. Monica Road in Banilad, Dumagute City but actually hails from nearby Siquijor province.

He was shot three times at the back while on board a tricycle, with body number 1699 driven by Eusebio Ceriales, at about 10:30 a.m.

Initial police investigation show the suspects overtook the tricycle on the right side of the road and again shot the victim, nearly hitting the driver.

According to the driver, Perewperew flagged him down a few meters away from the main entrance of Silliman University Medical Center and asked that he be brought to the “Ang Barko”, a pension house in Barangay Looc.

However, after few minutes, the suspects rode up to the tricycle and shot the victim on his back.

The driver said he did not clearly see the face of the triggerman because the shooting happened so fast and he made a U-turn and brought the victim to the nearby Silliman University Medical Center where Perewperew was declared dead on arrival.

Aside from his profession as a lawyer, police investigators are also looking into the alleged involvement of the victim in illegal drugs activity.

Perewperew was arrested and detained for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and was out on bail two to three years ago after being detained for more than one year.

According to Atty Joel Obar, Perewperew was his student in the college of law of Foundation University when he was still the dean.

Perewperew took the bar examinations twice, after which he was reported to be allegedly involved in illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, acting provincial police director Sr. Supt. Harris Fama said he had directed the Dumaguete police chief to conduct an in-depth investigation into the death of Perewperew.

Fama, through the Amigo Cops Text Blast project, disclosed that the victim is No. 2 in the Lambat Sibat watchlist in Siquijor, Siquijor.

Other unconfirmed reports say the victim was also allegedly engaged in land grabbing and smuggling and the wife also filed a complaint against him for physical injury.

Fama is asking the public to provide additional information to the police regarding the slain lawyer.

Sometime in April 2008, Perewperew and some members of his family were arrested in Barangay Ulo, Siquijor town in Siquijor province, for alleged possession of illegal drugs.

Agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force arrested the lawyer and his wife, Ernie, his father, Mansueto, and mother, Belinda.

Four other family members were also reported arrested in the same anti-illegal drugs operations that yielded huge volume of suspected shabu and a firearm and ammunition, among others.

Law enforcement authorities had kept Perewperew and his family under close surveillance and it took months before they could finally obtain a search warrant against the suspects. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
