Flash Report - Bohol Dengue Outbreak Beyond Control?

Philippine Daily Inquirer

The Department of Health (DOH) regional office has declared an outbreak of dengue in two city barangays as dengue patients crowded hospitals here.

The DOH regional office declared the outbreak in Barangays Cogon and Dao in Tagbilaran City based on the recommendation of Tagbilaran City health officer Dr. Antonio Porticos.

Susanna Madarieta, DOH Central Visayas regional director, said officials declared the outbreak in the two barangays as the number of dengue patients steadily increased and surpassed the number in the previous months.

The DOH has recorded 54 dengue cases in Barangay Cogon and 48 in Barangay Dao since January.

As of Friday morning, the DOH reported 512 dengue cases in the province, with 10 casualties since January this year.

Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot, provincial health officer, said 208 of the 512 dengue cases come from Tagbilaran. The DOH also declared the towns of Jagna and Dauis as dengue “hot spots.”

In July alone, DOH recorded 142 dengue cases in Bohol, more than half of the number of dengue cases reported in the province for the entire 2006.

Last year, the provincial health office recorded 268 dengue cases in Bohol. This figure has already been surpassed halfway through this year.

But the figure could be much higher, said Cabagnot, as their records are only based on hospital listings.

As the number of dengue cases continued to rise, six private hospitals have already refused to admit dengue-related patients.

Its ironic that our local newspaper banners the release of millions of pesos for lot acquisition in panglao at a time when children are dying of dengue.  Its ironic that we dream of mega projects and mega developments even if we cannot solve dengue which is as old a disease as diarrhea.  Well, dengue is nothing new. Its not like the SARS which has no known epidemiology.  For all I know, dengue strikes during rainy days.  So kailangan pa bang e memorize yan?    Its just a matter of institutionalizing dengue prevention and control measures in all LGU’s.  But sad to say our LGU officials are instead institutionalizing the SOP thing in their system.  No wonder, mega projects are more important than dengue prevention and control.
