Emergency Treatment Sections in Bohol Hospitals

The Bohol Chronicle

Government hospitals in the province will be setting up emergency treatment sections to provide primary treatment to dengue patients coming from the towns.

This is an off-shot to the urgency of decongesting hospitals in the city that started to refuse admission of patients due to overflow of dengue victims.

The fastlane program came even as "Dengue Alert" of DYRD-Chronicle, Alturas Group and the city government enters its fourth day today (July 26, 2007) with its fogging operations at dengue stricken areas.

The Department of Health (DOH) Regional Office raised a province-wide dengue alert after cases of dengue fever has already claimed 10 children and afflicted 512 others, per latest official count of the Provincial Health Office yesterday.

Eleven district hospitals, provincial hospitals and the Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital will set up the "dengue fastlane" as teams from the regional office have observed that most of dengue patients from the towns prefer to be treated here in city hospitals.

This scenario has caused the congestion of public and private hospitals here. Read the full story HERE

The fogging was not effective in fact the mosquito's are larger and bite bigger now. They need to fog at least every two to three months to keep it effectively working. You know if it rains after fogging it is pointless and our temperature here in Bohol is always humid and humidity is 85% water weight and then what happens the fogging chemicals are washed away this is why it is needed more so here then then compared to other places that do not have the humidity such as tropical islands.
When fogging is used in countries that are having four seasons it is okay every six months spring and summer time as the cold weather will make them dormant and eventually die out as they thrive on heat and water to breed and hatch their larvae in. :P

Dengue fever is a viral disease composed of four viral types: (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4). Due to the sporadic cases of Dengue in tropical environments (south east asia, caribbean, sub-saharan africa, south america, latin america, oceania and pacifica) the disease retains a highly mutative trait. Due to this mutative trait, there is little to no immunity of an infected person to the virus's symptoms. The virus is vector-based, and so long as there are mosquitoes to spread the virus to a secondary and tertiary host, there will be the manifestation of infections. There is no vaccine for Dengue, unfortunately, and the only medical treatment for those infected with it is proper diagnosis of the disease during the symptorallic period (which is between the 7 day span), hydration is a proper treatment of the disease--as one side effect of Dengue is Peurperalsis, high temperature, and eventual systemic failure.

So long as there are breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes (responsible for vector transmission), and a high segment of the population (rural areas) within the mosquitoes' sphere of control, there will be, unfortunately, manifestations of Dengue fever.

The only proper way to assess this is mentioned in the article posted above. There has to be increased medical clinics with capabilities to treat emergency patients, and intensive care units to help the patient recover. An infected patient with DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4 forms of the virus needs proper food intake, sleep, bathing, and hydration to augment the patient's natural defense (the immune system) to fight of the disease. Insofar, medical professionals can only treat the symptoms of the disease. The throbbing pain (due to joint locks) can be assessed vis-a-vis pain relief medication (Acetaminophen, codeine, pethidine{but for only sever cases})

In fighting dengue, prevention is primary. There is no way to fully exterminate Dengue, it is a viral form that has existed before the rise of the human species and one that continues to mutate; any anti-viral would be rendered ineffective as the virus has been known to completely evade the inhibitory qualities of most antiviral drugs; and would mutate to another strain. Basically, this virus mutates faster than human drug industry can study, design, litigate and sell prescription anti-virals. Additionally, Dengue not only affects homo sapiens, but all members of the animalia continuum.
