Boholanos are alarmed as the province topped in Central Visayas in the incidence of dog bites and in deaths caused by rabies.
The region itself consistently ranks in the top 5 nationwide, confirmed Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Liza Lapiz on Thursday during this month's edition of "Alarma", a monthly forum of the Bohol Tri-Media Association which was hosted by Dao Diamond Bed and Breakfast.
In 2007, there were 2,669 cases of dog bites with 10 deaths.
This, despite a provincial ordinance adopted last year for the mandatory registration and vaccination of dogs.
Provincial legal officer Atty. Handel Lagunay during the same forum said corresponding municipal ordinances have also been adopted since 2007 when the high number of dog bite cases alarmed health authorities here.
According to Lapiz, a campaign educating dog owners of responsible pet ownership and seizing stray dogs still needs the support of local government units.
The provincial veterinarian attributes the high incidence of dog bites to the unabated breeding of canines and irresponsible pet owners.
