Cutting red tape key to raising economic performancePhilippine Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said the country's economy could be further propelled if doing business is further eased. Zubiri, who was speaker at the Visayas Area Business Conference, said Senate Bill 1311 or the Expanded Anti-Red Tape Act of 2017 has been approved on third and final reading. When the bill becomes a law, Zubiri was optimistic that the Philippines can overtake its ASEAN neighbors and generate more income from local and foreign businesses. He added that the Visayas region can easily reach a 20% growth if the law is implemented. Last year, the Visayas economy grew 8.47%, driven by continued expansion of the BPO industry, an increase in tourism arrivals, and construction spending.
