Candijay Mayor Sergio Amora, Jr. reiterated what he said earlier that the armed men arrested in a checkpoint for violation of the Comelec gun ban were out to kill him.
The prime time radio program Cuentas Claras over Station DYTR interviewed Mayor Amora a day after seven men, three of them armed, were intercepted in a checkpoint mounted Tuesday by the Candijay police in answer to a complaint that the subject group reportedly threatened two customers of a karaoke bar located in sitio Crossing, Poblacion, Candijay town.
In the radio interview, Mayor Amora, minced no words in accusing the armed group as having the motivation to kill him.
The Post called up the mayor yesterday to confirm what he had been saying in the radio interview.
Running for reelection under the ruling Lakas-Kampi CMD, Mayor Amora said the suspects who were part of a seven-man group which was sowing fear in the karaoke joint had been staying for at least two weeks already in the compound of a non=government organization. The NGO was later identified as Community Awareness and Services for Ecological Concerns (CASEC). The NGO’s executive director is a certain Egay Dy, husband of Candijay V-Mayor Ann Piquero Dy. The armed group was intercepted in a checkpoint aboard an ambulance registered under the name of Casec.
Justifying his claim of an assassination plot, Mayor Amora said he has reason to believe that the armed men were plotting to kill him on account of the proximity of their holding area in Candijay. He said the Casec compound is located about 250 meters from his residence. The suspects were apprehended in a spot about 10 to 15 meters from his residence, the mayor added.
At the same time, the mayor revealed that before their apprehension, the armed men stayed in the residence of Jesus “Jessie†Olaivar in Cogtong Candijay.
Olaivar is said to be the uncle of Trygve Olaivar, a mayoralty candidate representing the opposition in the town. Manila-based, Olaivar is reportedly connected with the Commission on Elections main office and is running under the Nationalist People’s Coalition. Although he is not in the same party with V-Mayor Dy who is running for reelection under a different affiliation, the two were said to be working together to topple Mayor Amora.
The Candijay mayor began to suspect that he was the object of a slay attempt after he learned that the father of Dy was overheard to have said “mapatay man jud nang mayor†(the mayor could be killed). Although it was dismissed as a mere “slip of the tongueâ€, the mayor has since considered it as a threat to his life. - Sunday Post
