Policemen in Bohol involved in the successful operation in apprehending the six members of the notorious 'Meloy Garcia' criminal gang will have a big chance of getting a commendation from no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
National Police Commission (Napolcom-7) Director Atty. Eduardo Calibo bared their office is making a recommendation for the Bohol cop-operatives to receive a Presidential Commendation for their exemplary performance in collaring the criminal suspects.
Calibo said the recommendation will be submitted to the commission en banc which in turn will submit the body's proposal for Presidential Commendation to President Arroyo.
The Presidential Commendation is separate from the proposal for promotion, Calibo said.
Calibo revealed that it is the Philippine National Police that will initiate the recommendation for promotion of the concerned cops while their office merely recommends it.
The Napolcom regional chief however, declared that the proposal for promotion will undergo a thorough scrutiny and evaluation to ensure that only those involved in the operation are merited with a step in rank.
Calibo said previous incidents have happened that during a promotion deliberation, the list of names to be promoted includes those that are not even part of the operation which is the reason why any recommended promotion takes a longer time than a commendation.
As to the claim of former Panglao Mayor Dolerech Dumaluan that the credit for the successful arrest of the two members of the 'Meloy Garcia' gang should go to the beach resort's security guard who tipped off the police about the two suspects is inaccurate, Calibo pointed out.
Dumaluan owns the beach resort where the suspects went into hiding after the bank robbery.
Calibo said while the security guard informed the police about the suspicious characters that checked-in in one of the cottages, the Tagbilaran City police force were responsible in crashing the door of the cottage while other cops from the Bohol Provincial Police Office surrounded the resort to prevent the escape of the suspects.
Calibo however lauded the efforts of the citizens in Bohol for being active in helping the police collar the criminals describing it as 'people power policy.' The community plays a vital role in crime prevention and maintaining peace and order in their locality, Calibo said.
Earlier, Police Regional Office (PRO-7) Deputy Director for Administration C/Supt. Ronald Roderos said that they are working on also giving out commendation or citation to the ordinary citizens who informed the police about the suspects which eventually led to their arrest. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)
