Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia loses her chairmanship of the Regional Peace and Order Council to Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto.
Chatto was appointed new RPOC-7 chairman on May 3 by Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.
The appointment of Chatto was signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and approved by President Benigno Aquino III on May 30.
The RPOC is composed of the governors, mayors of the highly urbanized cities, presidents of the Leagues of Municipalities of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
Chatto’s appointment will give him the authority to head the peace-keeping body that provides a forum for dialogue and deliberation of major issues and problems affecting peace and order, including insurgency in Central Visayas.
Chatto replaced Garcia who got reappointed to the position towards the fourth quarter last year through mass motion following the reconstitution of RPOC nationwide based on the DILG memorandum dated August 11, 2010.
Garcia immediately extended her congratulations to Chatto and assured her full support and cooperation to the new leadership.
“He can expect the same support from me in our efforts to keep this region peace,†Garcia said.
Garcia was chairperson of RPOC for three consecutive terms. She was first appointed to the position in 2004.
Aside from Chatto, three private sector representatives were also chosen to be part of RPOC. They are lawyer Tereso Balangkig as civic sector representative; Msgr. Roberto Alesna as religious sector representative; and Teodoro Locson representing business. (FREEMAN)
