MANILA – A 5.5-magnitude aftershock from Tuesday's massive quake in Central Visayas hit Bohol on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the epicenter of the 5.5-magnitude quake, the strongest yet to hit Bohol, was recorded 18 kilometers northwest of Tagbilaran City at 7:37 a.m.
The following intensities were felt:
Intensity VI (very strong) - Tagbilaran City
Intensity IV (moderately strong) - Dumaguete City; Lapu Lapu City; Sibulan, Negros Oriental
Intensity II (slightly felt) - Maasin, Southern Leyte; Mambajao, Camiguin
Phivolcs said the quake struck at a depth of 1 km and was tectonic in origin.
The agency said as of 5 a.m. today, a total of 1,213 aftershocks have been recorded.
The United States Geological Survey said magnitude "measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake, and is determined from measurements on seismographs."
Intensity, on the other hand, "measures the strength of shaking produced by the earthquake at a certain location. It is determined from effects on people, human structures, and the natural environment."
