Bohol Beauty Pageant Scandal
« on: July 27, 2009, 03:54:24 PM »
Although five days short to make it a full month, the famous Sandugo festival catapulted to its climax today amidst reports of unfulfilled promises regarding prizes in its previous staging three years ago.

First the bad news. This year’s Sandugo festivities were marred by reports that a winner in the 2006 Miss Bohol international was not able to enjoy her prize of a US round trip courtesy of pageant organizers.

Ms. Loida Tiza Lagonoy from Dimiao and who represented the University of Bohol raised several eyebrows Friday evening when she delivered a farewell speech on the occasion of the coronation of Miss Bohol International 2009.

Crowned as this year’s Miss Bohol International is Ms. Carleen Angelica Pepito Yap. SEE CAPTION STORY PAGE 2

It was actually not a farewell speech according to the program but was more of an impassioned one after the poor winner lambasted the pageant organizers for reneging in their promise to hand down the grand prize –an all expenses round trip to the US.

In her speech, she said she still felt cheated even if she was granted a US visa as a result of winning the prize.

The problem of US entry came when the plane ticket which was sponsored by Philippine Airlines lapsed its shelf life. Apparently due to some runaround of contest organizers to have the winner took the earliest flight possible, the free air passage of PAL expired. Her lament was that the organizers did not go out of their way to replace the expired air ticket.

According to those who witnessed the Friday coronation event, the audience was shocked about the revelation of the Dimiao beauty.

The 26-day festivities include the Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan which is supposed to start today but the Post chose to skip the proceedings arising from a high-handed treatment it got from some TBTK officers.

The paper’s reporter was assured by a certain Cora (the Post did not bother to get her family name) for a list of all balikbayans only to be told that a high-ranking TBTK officer did not like the idea of giving it to the Post.

As part of the Sandugo celebration, the Post was more than willing to publish the list of balikbayans coming home for the TBTK shindig. It was the paper’s way of gauging whether a heavy turn out of TBTK delegates was in place.

Since some TBTK officers must have thought of some other strange things in mind as to why they refused to release the list of participants of the grand homecoming, the Post management just consider the same as part of the hazard of the profession.  The Post management can only heave a sigh of relief thinking that on hindsight it will be able to save precious newspaper’s space.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

i am not surprised by this action of not replacing a ticket. I did not get my Hungarian sausage meal dinner replaced at 160 pesos when I found a long black hair sticking it from it.
The coffee shop did nothing about it here to help me have my order replaced.

This is a part of of that cause and affect and how to solves problems that i posted in an earlier topic.

Tickets like this has an expiry date of one year. To make this kind of contest credible, they ( the organizers) could have done something to give her the prize she deserved as a winning contestant.

Loida Lagonoy 'deprived'
Miss Bohol International?

Wake-uppers:

Rose Soy shows no signs of slowing down.       Enhorabuena to Mrs. Rose Soy for winning the prestigious Mrs. Bohol International 2009. The Queen of Rotary for four straight years, Mrs. Rose shows no signs of slowing down as she continues to help the needy through the Rotary projects. Mrs. Rose's involvement in the Mrs. Bohol International (one of the many activities of TBTK chaired by Mrs. Betty Veloso-Garcia) serves as an inspiration to everyone that "charity begins at home."

Correction, please: From Reigh Monreal: Noella Mae Buhion Evangelista of Iligan City, both parents are Boholanos, was crowned Queen of Tourism International and Queen of Continental Asia in 2003. That makes her the first Boholana to join and win in an international beauty pageant. Evangelista was judge of the Miss Bohol International 2009 on July 24 together with beauty queen Janina San Miguel and Direk Maryo delos Reyes.

Could it be true that one of the nominees for the Ten Outstanding Boholanos Around the World or Tobaw (the awarding was held last night) was "angry" --- and more when he learned that he was excluded? According to Bared Very Reliable Source (VRS), the nomination was rejected because it lacks merits and this person needs to establish himself in the community. "We set a standard to follow because the award is not just an ordinary award given to outstanding Boholanos. You can ask anybody to nominate or you can nominate yourself, but the committee has still to research and evaluate the nominees if they are worth to be included in the dossier of outstanding Boholanos," VRS said. "Perhaps this person is living in a grand delusion. It's hard to open your eyes if your dreams are too sweet, but sometimes it's a must to wake up because it's the only reasonable way to see reality," VRS added.

Some members of this association are spreading stories that this (famous) journalist in the province "tribulized" the presscon they're hosting because he was wearing only slippers. In the first place, the journalist would not come to the presscon because of other important event but he went with the group when he found out that there was no media. He's wearing shorts and Havaianas to fit himself with the ambiance in Dauis. The members were so "sweet" when this journalist was around, but when he went home, the members were talking negative things that it was recorded in a mobile phone by a member (who has the conscience and the only angel in the group). The journalist is throwing away all his 8 pairs of Havaianas and Roxy for them to know that his slippers are more expensive than the members who loss the values of their organization. "We are wondering how they become members?" VRS shared the sentiment.

Miss Bohol Sandugo 2006 Loida Tisa Lagonoy made a "shocking" revelation that she is "deprived" of many things (and rights) as a beauty queen including her roundtrip ticket prize going to the USA.

And it came to pass that while all of us had our eyes and ears glued to the wide-screen waiting to see her again, Miss Bohol International 2006 Loida Tiza Lagonoy (who represented University of Bohol) made the most unexpected "shocking" and "awful" revelation of all time in the history of beauty pageantry in the province of Bohol during the Miss Bohol International 2009 coronation night held on July 24 at the Holy Name University gym.

Loida "accused" the organizers that her round trip ticket prize going to the US in 2006 was not given to her and she was not accorded the treatment that befitted a queen.

She created mixed of emotions-surprising everyone - when she said that her "reign was a reign that never was."

"My reign was the reign that never was. I have not been involved in any activity that I could serve the purpose of my title well," she said.

Loida said she was more than willing to assume the role that should been designed for her but it was never materialized.

"I was not able to travel because I didn't receive any roundtrip ticket which is supposedly one of my major prizes. I had to sweat my way out to claim such an elusive prize which I believed should not reached such a stressful point it had only been effectively facilitated," she further said.

Unlike the previous winners (Miss Bohol International 1999 Chan Cajegas and Miss Bohol International 2003 Maya Calope Galva) who were treated and pampered more than queens, Loida said she didn't receive a "queenly" treatment from the organizers. "I didn't receive a treatment anybody would expect to be given to a beauty queen," she said.

She also said that she handled the whole affair with dignity, grace and pose.

Loida wants to be remembered as a Miss Bohol International "a person who sincerely expressed her gratitude to the people who helped her… somehow who is giving back to the community her own caring ways, and somehow who remains true and honest in all her dealings with people and around her."

The irony was while the speech was played, she was smiling and waving to all as if she was mocking them. Her bravura act eclipsed and outshone the crowning of the new queens (the Miss Bohol International 2009 is Carlene Yap representing the Philippine Nurses Association-Bohol chapter).

"I was being honest. If I didn't do it, I will regret for the rest of my life," she said.

In the production number, Loida appeared in "Nobody's dance" together with the dancers but she wasn't acknowledged. "So, we didn't know it was her," said one watcher.

Seasoned host Raul Gatal interviewed Loida Lagonoy in 2006. Raul knows how to enliven the crowd unlike this year's search.

According to "beauty experts" who were at the pageant night, "we admire her guts and for saying it as it was."

According to VRS, Loida wasn't in a hurry to get her visa when she won because she was still a 3rd year college student taking up Nursing at the University of Bohol. "Wala siya magdali (she's not in a hurry) because she know she has 2 years," VRS said.

The ticket issue mounted weeks ago and we're thinking there was amicable settlement. In a talk with Ate Vi weeks ago, Loida was not given the roundtrip tickets because she didn't claim it during her reign. However, Loida said, "I understand there was 1 year claimability and 1 year validity ticket going to LA, USA I was third year when I won. If graduate ko sakto akong calculation that it was time to go to the USA."

Another VRS said that "it's sad to say that both parties have no written agreement." "The winners don't know their role because beauty pageants in Bohol have no contracts so definitely the winners don't know their role during their year. It's about time that the organizers should be professional since the beauty pageant industry is alive."

After the revelation, Loida is being asked everywhere she goes. "God knows what's best for me and I need to fight for my right."

Bared tried to get the side of the organizer (the 1996 Miss Bohol International was chaired BY Dame Pureza Chatto and the 2009 Miss Bohol International is chaired by Vilma "Ate Vi" Yorong) but he failed to. A space will be given to them if they're ready to air their side.

Sidelights and highlights

Carlene Yap is the Miss Bohol International 2009

Here are some interesting sidelights to this year's Miss Bohol International:

Just like the first three editions, it started an hour late. Its saving graces were the fast-pacing of the show and the good batch of candidates.

The candidates were sexy in their production number. Carlene Yap who was darling of the press stood elegantly. Jagna's bet Idy Caseñas Cagas was an early favorite but she wasn't able to make it to the top 5.

Guldameer Sombrio who represented SK was proclaimed 4th runner-up. The SK family were all there to support her quest.

Mestiza beauties who joined this year's aren't "mabenta" to the judges.

The host, Roy Ecleo of ABS-CBN Cebu, though look gorgeous wasn't able to enliven the crowd. With his limited communication skills with the candidates and the crowd, the show was a bit boring. He made the pageant his concert night.

For the pageant that boasted of international caliber, the production values were disappointing to say the least.

What Chatto and Cajes will wear at Sona?

Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's State of the Nation's Address (Sona) will be tomorrow. Representatives Edgar Chatto, Roberto Cajes and Adam Relson JAla will wear Barong Tagalog.

Dame Pureza Chatto will wear Filipiniana to the Sona. "I always wear Filipiniana, Yeah, terno as we call it."

Trinidad Mayor Judith del Rosario-Cajes will wear a terno made from raffia (from Inabanga) exclusively designed for her by Charloe Arbasto. The gown is hand-painted. Carloe also designed the Barong Tagalog of Rep. Cajes made of raffia.

SK national president Jane Censoria Cajes will wear dark blue modern Filipiniana gown.

What is missing here is the proper form of communication.
In my opinion, Loida´s act was unqueenly to lambast the organizers in this form. Uwaw kaayo ang nahitabo, her name will never be forgotten, and no matter how honest are the intentions of the organizers  there will be  malicious talks.
Activities in this caliber have written agreements. So this statement is a baloney;
Another VRS said that "it's sad to say that both parties have no written agreement." Manay Tess, we are a free country so we HAVE THE FREEDOM of speech. What I saw sa youtube, Loida is just narrating what happened in her reign. What's wrong with it?

She's that brave and honest!

What caliber you're talking about? Beauty pageants in Bohol are not caliber. Hey, excuse me. You are that old!!!!!Don't comment if you were not there in Pinas. You ask talent handlers and other organizers if beauty pageants in Bohol has CONTRACT AND AGREEMENTS? THEY DON'T HAVE!!!!! MY cousins there who were involved know the sad situation of the beauty pageant industry in Bohol.

I have one request: AYAW PATAKA OG COMMENT KUNG WALA KA KAHIBAW. KATAW-ANAN LANG KA.

I sympathize with Loida. Hers, however, is not a first case in regard to TBTK. In 2003, usa ka lungsod ang migasto'g daku for the float of its contestant sa Miss Bohol International.

Kami diri ang mahu'g nga sulugoon just to make the short visit of these balikbayans memorable for them. As usual, naay medical mission, distribution of books and whatever, etc. Kulang ta og investments which translate to employment for a good number of Boholanos. Kon ang TBTK mo resulta og local investment and employment, mas maayo, mas may kahulugan ang pagpasiugda niini.

Compared with the beauty pageant participants even on the national level, Loida impresses me as an articulate, smart woman who deserves the crown.

What she ventilated may have sounded like a "bomb" to the organizers, but to me, it was an honest, gracious and at the same time biting expression of her frustration at the treatment she was given.

I just hope TBTK will not begrudge her candor but use this incident to address the shortcomings and improve the conduct of the pageant.

I one-hundred percent agree. Both about Loida's and about the shortcomings.

I agree w/ you koddi pruds. po.ol na kaajo ang salida sa TBTK. frankly, sa ahong sabot, pasikat lang ning gihimo nila. mas maajo jud ang ilang himoon, kong gusto silang maka tabang, mag put up sila ug gagmayng negosyo, maka employ ug pila ka bo.ok trabahante, maajo na kaajo. pasayloa ko mga libakbayans, im just stating my own opinion...hihihi

p.s. i can also be considered as a balikbayan but i dance to my own tune. i'm a "maverick"

Ikaw jud, Jan. In essence, apil baya tang tanan ani kay tiaw bay Tibuok Kalibutan. Pero mao lagi, kami diri ang tiglingaw sa mga balikbayan like the members of Conbusac or Confederation of Boholanos in USA and Canada. By the way, ang taga inyo nga si Guldameer Marilou Labastilla Sombrio naapil sa top five sa Miss Bohol Sandugo 2009 (she was best in interview) and Miss Bohol International 2009. She represented Bohol SK.

Ms Da Binsi, don't talk when you don't know the issue. pataka lang ka. Loida reached out na sa organizers. She had her visa last year . there was no expiration date sa PAL.

To each his/her own opinion lang ta dinhi ha . . . dili lang ta mag personalan og tira.  Thank you. Salamat sa mga cool heads.

By the way, naa tingali poy gamayng "paghigmata" as regards their (CONBUSAC's) program kay, through the Provincial Veterinarian's Office, nag distribute man sila'g mga kabaw somewhere in the northeastern towns.  I hope activities like these which benefit, in this case, the poor farmers, maoy magdaghan.  Throughout the year man gud naa nay daghan kaayong medical missions. Mao man gud ni kasagaran pang public service nga activity kon TBTK.

Darn it daghan na noon tag mabaw-an aning mga grupo2x!

I have to agree with Benneylyn,

I am also proud of her honesty, and maybe she had no cooperation from organizers about the situation. So she after her hurt and fights to go abroad were not heard when the problem had arisen so why not bring it to the public this is what we call bringing it to attention and keeping the eyes out for it not to happen again.

This woman is an example for others here who want to say but never say and also those who hide behind what they have to say.

If what you have to say will maybe make a difference and makes things better then go for it.

I do not find here whining I find her direct to the point. I think we use to have the quote posted around town be honest when others are not.

As far as the press conference for media i was not aware of it and I am usually invited to sit on the committee to hear the pageant committee discuss the rules.

I was a press judge for Miss TBTK and I do recall the winner of this year was two hours coming in late from previous engagements. The questions by the media were very rushed indeed.

My good friend who is a Norwegian was a judge this year for Miss Bohol International.

He did not have any complaints.

I heard the judges for darling of the press during Miss Tagbilaran were chosen by non press persons they were just chosen by the judges themselves. With the exception of Atty. Salva Diputado.

Now we know Salva is with a the same radio station as the Mayor reports are on. We know already the reputation Mayor has with other media here so I am sure with Mario Uy as Chairman of this pageant and Mayor's good friend it was very convenient to ask Salva to represent the media/press since he is having a show just after Mayor's brgy. patrol on DYTR.

So much fabot fabor here.

This year i did not go to Sandugo at the grandstand or the street dancing you know every year who will win same time over and over again.

reminds me of Alturas Drum and Bugle when CVS Caft is always the winner even if they are not always the best on the field.

I use to be a drum corp international I should know what is a good corp on the field.

Maybe the requirements should read that the candidates be holding a visa before entering the contest....(LOL!).

. . . This year i did not go to Sandugo at the grandstand or the street dancing you know every year who will win same time over and over again.

It has been a long time since I last witnessed the Sandugo street dancing competition.  It has become boring. The same choreography every year, becoming too generic, you see these dance steps, costumes and productions in street dancing competitions elsewhere.
