Quote:
"A 60-year old Belgian man killed his 37-year old Filipino wife and then shot himself in a fit of jealous rage in a northern Philippine town, a police officer said yesterday.  Constant Van Girt allegedly shot dead his wife Rosaly during a heated argument inside their house in Iguig town of Cagayan on Wednesday.  Senior Inspector Wilfredo Dupaya said that after killing his wife, Van Girt shot himself."

Opted to post this article for others to reflect especially to the 2 recent cases in Bohol.  A lot have spoken objectively on the issue.  There must me some deeper reasons; but to judge Boholanos and creating stories that would make the tourism business suffers is inappropriate and not fair.

Homicide occurs everywhere, it doesn't matter what race, ethnicity or creed. Its unfair to judge Boholanos and our province for some unfortunate killings, but one has to remember that there are over 1,000,000 people living in the province of Bohol. It's a huge province, not a small town or a mere island.

Compare the homocide rate in the Philippines with that of the United States is overwhelming. More so over here than there. Or the crime rates in India (which is extremely high), or in Mexico, Iran, China, etc.

Its an unfortunate thing that homicides occur, but we must leave it to the internal security of our province to do their job. And to abase a local people because of unfortunate incidents is rather unfair. One murderer or two do not represent the entire continuum of Boholanos, or Filipinos.

Exactly.  As what another TB member said in the other threads, crime knows no race.  It isn't fair to "condemn" the whole race just because a murder or two had happened.  In America, murders happen almost everyday and I still couldn't believe that most of the perpetrators are family members and or close friends.  Just the other day, they put to rest in Tracy, California an 8-year old girl Sandra Cantu kidnapped and then killed and raped (I don't know which particular order - killed first then raped or raped first then killed).  And the suspect, a 28-year old mother, the mother of Sandra's best friend and a neighbor, a grand daughter of a local Baptist pastor.  Another case that's still on going is the murder of a baby girl Caylee in Florida allegedly by her own mother.

There's also a case I remember that couple of women friends marry homeless people here then insured these men then later died in suspicious manners.

What I am trying to say or should I say, let me reiterate that I agree with the person who said that crime knows no race.  It happens everywhere.  It is disgraceful that some crimes happen in our own beautiful province which are known to be home of loving and peaceful people, but it is still unfair to label the whole country as some sort of horrible people to the point of "imploring" for prospective investors not to go to Bohol.  Killing of a person, be they are white or blue, still hurts all of us. It is so wrong to curtail the life of a person, no mater how bad we perceived these people are.  These victims have families who care for them so much.  No matter what, killing is just so, so unacceptable and a very big sin.  We punish the sinners not the whole race.

Its really sad.

I think we should be careful to compare criminal statistic. Since different countries have different policing and judicial systems, different trust schemes, non-democratic system and other countries, corruption is deeply rooted.

Only in the U.S. it differs greatly between states, on how the judiciary works and how successful they are in solving crimes.

I also think that crime statistics should be distinguished from those which are fixed accommodation and tourist guests. Similarly, if crime is between the local or the tourist guests, etc.. Many murders are often related in families or ring of friends, by someone you know or are familiar with.

As long as a country has a high level of corruption will never be the judiciary that has credibility. Therefore, a corrupt society never survive like a healthy and good society for the people self who feed the system. It takes several generations and the Philippines have a long too way to go.

By the way, someone who knows about the old murders cases of foreigners is solved to the satisfaction of the system satisfactorily, the American who was murdered in Valencia and the German in Baclayon?

A murder is always too much and should never be justified, regardless of race or class.
