Bad spirits disturb Boholano students

The Bohol Chronicle

Are "Exorcism" and "spiritual possession" only seen in the movies? Can it be real these days?

Who would have thought what Mons. Medroso of the Tagbilaran diocese described as "phenomenon" would occur in this high-tech information age?

These mind-boggling questions relative to "phenomenon" have stirred the peace-loving residents of barangay Hanopol, Balilihan; Bayawahan, Sevilla; and Anoling, Candijay. Many believe the students were "possessed."

Bishop Medroso, in an interview with the DyRD last week, said that the Catholic Church would not jump to conclusion on what really happened to the "possessed." He practically stressed that the "phenomenon" should be examined. The Church has been very careful on this case or any other religious specter.

The latest to occur was in Anoling High School, Anoling, Candijay town last week. Seventeen students have manifested "spiritual possession," source said.

Several high school students of barangay Bayawahan, Sevilla town also experienced the same "phenomenon," said Sevilla information officer Walter Pondoc during the meeting of the Association of United Development Information Officers (AUDIO) recently. The "phenomenon" is blamed on the so-called unseen tree dwellers.

The same occurred to students of Hanopol High School, Balilihan town sometime late last year, taking into account a big acacia tree.

This writer tried to contact barangay captain Sancho Cagampang of Anoling for comment but failed.

Lately, the "manifestations" have subsided, said the source who declined to be named.

Manifestations include uttering of words that can hardly be understood. Calming down the victims by putting rosary around the neck aggravates the seizure. And the "possessed" resisted and fight back, said Pondoc.

Even police officers and military men stationed in barangay Bayawahan, including Pondoc, tried hold back the victims but there were strong resistance. No way to pacify the victim, he said.

Candijay source said that Rev. Fr. Rey Omamalin also tried to help the victims.

However, manifestations persisted (w/ reports from Danny Reyes)

ya, im going to sleep with the rosary in my hand tonight.

I do believe in these things tho, its not something i take lightly kai my local pastor has dealt with these 'exorcisms' in the past.

Catholic priests that engage in exorcisms are trained in Rome in not only scripture, but in demonology and casting out demons. Talking about this right now sends chill down my spine and give me goosebumps.

Leave exorcism to the experts, warns Church
« Reply #7 on: March 02, 2008, 02:05:12 AM »
A far cry from sorcerers, satanists and other practitioners whom he dismisses as "charlatans," Italian exorcist Andrea Gemma fights the devil only with the strength of his prayers and advises Catholics: 'Don't do this at home".

A rotund, expansive Neapolitan, the 74-year-old bishop was the first lecturer to face the Catholic Church's latest crop of budding exorcists at a unique course run by clergy at Rome's Pontifical Regina Apostolorum University. The course began Thursday and will run for several weeks.

Faced with a classroom of 50 priests intent on learning how best to take on the devil, the veteran Gemma profiles his ideal comrade at arms, spiritually-speaking: "Live a holy life, work hard and be devoted to the Madonna".

The students at this second course -- the first course of its kind drew more than 100 priests last year -- include lay Catholics.

"If you reject God you leave a place for his enemy. Neutrality is not an option," the priest who heads the course, Father Gabriele Nanni of the ultra-conservative congregation Legionaires of Christ, tells them.

"And in our societies given over to neo-paganism, agnosticism, to a revolt against God, it was inevitable that the demon would find more space to act," he said.

Father Gemma is also convinced. In his small southern Italian diocese of Isernia, which has a population of 60,000 souls, he has nominated four exorcist priests -- well above the Italian average, where priests authorised to carry out exorcisms number in the several hundreds.

But he criticised the Italian bishops' council for being insufficiently committed to hunting down demons, though he said he was encouraged by Pope Benedict XVI's recent public support for priests tasked with such missions.

The pope had a brief exchange with a few of the priests attending a congress of Italian exorcists after one of his weekly general audiences last month, telling them to "continue your important mission in the service of the Church."

The prelate, whose titanic struggles against the devil fills several of his books, recognizes that not all the cases referred to him require exorcism.

Some are "poor people who need someone to listen to them," he said. "But those priests who send them away without listening to them patiently are not fit for the priesthood."

When someone is really possessed by the devil, he said, "freeing them of it can take months, if not years."

But the bishop is certain of one thing: "The devil is not the God of evil, God is stronger."

Asked about his method of discerning real cases of possession from other psychological illnesses, the priest revealed his "secret weapon":

"If I speak Latin, the demon responds to me in Latin. He has a horror of that language."

The following is taken from : http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05709a.htm (catholic online encyclopedia)

Exorcism

Exorcism is (1) the act of driving out, or warding off, demons, or evil spirits, from persons, places, or things, which are believed to be possessed or infested by them, or are liable to become victims or instruments of their malice; (2) the means employed for this purpose, especially the solemn and authoritative adjuration of the demon, in the name of God, or any of the higher power in which he is subject.

The word, which is not itself biblical, is derived from exorkizo, which is used in the Septuagint (Genesis 24:3 = cause to swear; III(I) Kings 22:16 = adjure), and in Matthew 26:63, by the high priest to Christ, "I adjure thee by the living God. . ." The non-intensive horkizo and the noun exorkistes (exorcist) occur in Acts 19:13, where the latter (in the plural) is applied to certain strolling Jews who professed to be able to cast out demons. Expulsion by adjuration is, therefore, the primary meaning of exorcism, and when, as in Christian usage, this adjuration is in the name of God or of Christ, exorcism is a strictly religious act or rite. But in ethnic religions, and even among the Jews from the time when there is evidence of its being vogue, exorcism as an act of religion is largely replaced by the use of mere magical and superstitious means, to which non-Catholic writers at the present day sometimes quite unfairly assimilate Christian exorcism. Superstition ought not to be confounded with religion, however much their history may be interwoven, nor magic, however white it may be, with a legitimate religious rite.

Ecclesiastical Exorcisms:

(1) Exorcism of the possessed

We have it on the authority of all early writers who refer to the subject at all that in the first centuries not only the clergy, but lay Christians also were able by the power of Christ to deliver demoniacs or energumens, and their success was appealed to by the early Apologists as a strong argument for the Divinity of the Christian religion (Justin Martyr, Apol., 6; P.G., VI, 453; Dial., 30, 85; ibid., 537, 676 sq; Minutius Felix, Octav., 27, P.L., III; Origen, Contra Celsum., I, 25; VII, 4, 67; P.G., XI, 705, 1425, 1516; Tertullian, Apol., 22, 23; P.L., I, 404 sq; etc). As is clear from testimonies referred to, no magical or superstitious means were employed, but in those early centuries, as in later times, a simple and authoritative adjuration addressed to the demon in the name of God, and more especially in the name of Christ crucified, was the usual form of exorcism.

But sometimes in addition to words some symbolic action was employed, such as breathing (insufflatio), or laying of hands on the subject, or making the sign of cross. St. Justin speaks of demons flying from "the touch and breathing of Christians" (II Apol., 6) as from a flame that burns them, adds St. Cyril of Jerusalem (Cat., xx, 3, P.G., XXXIII, 1080). Origen mentions the laying of hands, and St. Ambrose (Paulinus, Vit. Ambr., n. 28, 43, P.L, XIV, 36, 42), St. Ephraem Syrus (Greg. Nyss., De Vit. Ephr., P.G., XLVI, 848) and others used this ceremony in exorcising. The sign of the cross, that briefest and simplest way of expressing one's faith in the Crucified and invoking His Divine power, is extolled by many Fathers for its efficacy against all kinds of demoniac molestation (Lactantius, Inst., IV, 27, P.L., VI, 531 sq.; Athanasius, De Incarn. Verbi., n. 47, P.G., XXV, 180; Basil, In Isai., XI, 249, P.G., XXX, 557, Cyril of Jerusalem, Cat., XIII, 3 col. 773; Gregory Nazianzen, Carm. Adv. iram, v, 415 sq.; P.G., XXXVII, 842). The Fathers further recommend that the adjuration and accompanying prayers should be couched in the words of Holy Writ (Cyril of Jerusalem, Procat., n. 9, Col. 350; Athanasius, Ad Marcell., n. 33, P.G., XXVII, 45). The present rite of exorcism as given in the Roman Ritual fully agrees with patristic teaching and is a proof of the continuity of Catholic tradition in this matter.

(2) Baptismal exorcism

At an early age the practice was introduced into the Church of exorcising catechumens as a preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism. This did not imply that they were considered to be obsessed, like demoniacs, but merely that they were, in consequence of original sin (and of personal sins in case of adults), subject more or less to the power of the devil, whose "works" or "pomps" they were called upon to renounce, and from whose dominion the grace of baptism was about to deliver them.

Exorcism in this connection is a symbolical anticipation of one of the chief effects of the sacrament of regeneration; and since it was used in the case of children who had no personal sins, St. Augustine could appeal to it against the Pelagians as implying clearly the doctrine of original sin (Ep. cxciv, n. 46. P.L., XXXIII, 890; C. Jul. III, 8; P.L., XXXIV, 705, and elsewhere). St. Cyril of Jerusalem (Procat., 14, col. 355) gives a detailed description of baptismal exorcism, from which it appears that anointing with exorcised oil formed a part of this exorcism in the East. The only early Western witness which treats unction as part of the baptismal exorcism is that of the Arabic Canons of Hippolytus (n. 19, 29). The Exsufflatio, or out-breathing of the demon by the candidate, which was sometimes part of the ceremony, symbolized the renunciation of his works and pomps, while the Insufflatio, or in-breathing of the Holy Ghost, by ministers and assistants, symbolised the infusion of sanctifying grace by the sacrament. Most of these ancient ceremonies have been retained by the Church to this day in her rite for solemn baptism.

(3) Other Exorcisms

According to Catholic belief demons or fallen angels retain their natural power, as intelligent beings, of acting on the material universe, and using material objects and directing material forces for their own wicked ends; and this power, which is in itself limited, and is subject, of course, to the control of Divine providence, is believed to have been allowed a wider scope for its activity in the consequence of the sin of mankind. Hence places and things as well as persons are naturally liable to diabolical infestation, within limits permitted by God, and exorcism in regard to them is nothing more that a prayer to God, in the name of His Church, to restrain this diabolical power supernaturally, and a profession of faith in His willingness to do so on behalf of His servants on earth.

The chief things formally exorcised in blessing are water, salt, oil, and these in turn are used in personal exorcisms, and in blessing or consecrating places (e.g. churches) and objects (e.g. altars, sacred vessels, church bells) connected with public worship, or intended for private devotion. Holy water, the sacramental with which the ordinary faithful are most familiar, is a mixture of exorcised water and exorcised salt; and in the prayer of blessing, God is besought to endow these material elements with a supernatural power of protecting those who use them with faith against all the attacks of the devil. This kind of indirect exorcism by means of exorcised objects is an extension of the original idea; but it introduces no new principle, and it has been used in the Church from the earliest ages.

It seems that world events turned with what I did last week, where I made a research about exorcism.

The following are the things I learned:

1. There is a warning not to try exorcism at home or if you are not fully trained because you are dealing with powerful spirits and they could seriously hurt you.

2. During the old days, it is only the Bishop who is authorized to perform Exorcism.

3. In modern times, ordinary priests can or even a trained person can perform exorcism, but there is a warning from the Pope that  "Priests who have done unrightful things or priest who broke their vow of celibacy (priests who engaged in sexual imorality) should not perform exorcism or their act will only strengthen the devil instead of driving them".

4. The Devil Hates Latin: It is always effective if exorcism is performed in Latin. Warning: Do not read this aloud as the devil might get provoked and might hurt you.

Here is Exorcism (In Latin) taken from my archives.

EXORCISMVS

Imperat tibi sacramentum Crucis + , omniumque christianæ fidei Mysteriorum virtus +. Imperat tibi excelsa Dei Genitrix Virgo Maria + , quæ superbissimum caput tuum a primo instanti immaculatæ suæ conceptionis in sua humilitate contrivit.

V. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.
R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.
[si fuerit saltem diaconus subjungat V. Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.]

Oremus.

D Eus coeli, Deus terræ, Deus Angelorum, Deus Archangelorum, Deus Patriarcharum, Deus Prophetarum, Deus Apostolorum, Deus Martyrum, Deus Confessorum, Deus Virginum, Deus qui potestatem habes donare vitam post mortem, requiem post laborem; quia non est Deus præter te, nec esse potest nisi tu creator omnium visibilium et invisibilium, cujus regni non erit finis: humiliter majestati gloriæ tuæ supplicamus, ut ab omni infernalium spirituum potestate, laqueo, deceptione et nequitia nos potenter liberare, et incolumes custodire digneris. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, Domine.
Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos.
Ut inimicos sanctæ Ecclesiæ humiliare digneris, te rogamus audi nos.

Et aspergatur locus aqua benedicta

Warning: Use the above only as last resort. The devil is a powerful being and they may seriously hurt you if provoked. Please do not under-estimate the power of the dark side as sometimes it is un-natural.

It is already said raba, 'te, that we should not try to commune with the dead or through mediums or use magic. The Lord God, The Most High, even decreed this to the prophets. The Angel of the Lord God told prophets of the old testament to evade using sorcery because those are the mediums of demons, and are toys of the Devil, most unclean, most dirty, most unholy, the Great Liar of the Flood.

Some references from Holy Scripture:

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try [test] the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (2) Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (3) And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (4) Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (5) They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. (6) We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error."
-1 John 4:1

More:

Leviticus 19:31 - Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 20:6 - The person who turns after mediums and familiar spirits, God says He would set His face against that person and cut him off from his people.

Leviticus 20:27 - A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones.

Revelation 21:8 - But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Exodus 7-9; read 8:18,19 - Pharaoh's magicians and sorcerers tried to duplicate the signs and plagues God caused through Moses and Aaron (7:11,22; 8:7,8,18; 9:11). For a while they seemed to achieve a limited succeed. But soon they failed and admitted Moses had the power of God.

Elsie, thanks for sharing your personal experiences.
They call that 'speaking in tongues'.
Ive witnessed this before when I attended a Catholic Youth Retreat several years back.
When we were reciting the apostle's creed and the benediction to the Blessed Crucifix on the Altar.
Where some of the youth would collapse, and rise up crying.
I felt it before, where our eyes were focused on the Holy Sacrament, and you could see a light coming out, piercing us not only physically but spiritually.

Very rare is this experience, Elsie.

This is what they call the 'touching' of the faithful by the hand of the Holy Spirit, the Lord God.

The devil and his demons try to test the faith of those who are faithful to the word of God. It is their form of defying and mocking God, by attacking his faithful. Even tho we may be tempted or even possessed by the devil's demons, the Lord God, who sitteth on His Divine Throne is not blind or deaf to such transgressions. His Mercies are there, every pain, every temptation we feel, he also feels. So long as we call on Him, He is there.

For who is stronger? The liar Devil and his deceiving demons or the Righteous and Pure Justice and Absolute Love that is The Lord God? Who Made Everything. The Devil and Demons are able and permitted to have such power, the same power they had when they were still angels, because the Lord allows free will. We are free to accept His Truth and His Salvaton, or be blinded by the lies of the Devil.

There is no 'Middle Ground' there is no 'Agnostic' when it comes to this.

When one rejects The Lord, then you unwhitingly invite the Devil and his legions of demons.

Sure it is natural for us to fear the Devil and his unnatural power, but put your Trust in the Lord.

Els, we experienced a powerful event, a Holy and Humbling event when I and some friends attended a Youth Retreat for the Catholic Diocese of Erie County some years back.

It was an Eucharistic Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament, The Parcelate of Christ Jesus.
I personally felt it. Ang effect is your head being cleansed, confusion was removed from my mind,
A feeling of TOTAL happiness. TOTAL content. I remember CRYING, tears were falling out of my eyes after experiencing it. Beautiful. Words cannot explain it jud.

It was like this event jud.

In one of the seminar conducted here in KSA, the lecturer explained that when the Chalice is raised up by the priest, the doors of heaven will open and we should not look at the chalice because for some moment, it will undergo a physical transformation into the body of Christ. The lecturer further explained that there are certain things not possible in Science, but scientist are theorizing it to be possible, like gold can be turned into a silver by altering its atomic structure. Though not proven, it is theoretically possible.

Also, it is possible in quantum theory, where a person can be at two places in one time dimension. According to scientists and theorists, time is an eternal "now".

You can not measure God's glory and power through mere imagination. He is the creator of these universe bounded by his laws of physics. But why does a great powerful being offered his own son for his love to us humans? These must be something that we must think about.

Macky, I thought when the chalice is raised up by the priest and the sacristan rings the bell, we should all look up to the chalice then we vow our head.

I went to an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of Jesus today at St. Agatha's Roman Catholic Church, attended it with some older women from 4pm-5pm. I don't know how, but as a man trained in science, there are times when I forget my science and believe only in what I cannot see. In faith, believing is seeing. In my heart, completely and truly, the Lord Christ Jesus is in the chalice, in the Blessed Sacrament. Beyond the gold, the metal, there is the heart of Christ.

Like what Mr. Ferniz said, science cannot explain everything. I trust that statement jud. For when I was praying with those elderly women, my faith (which has doubts sometimes) was reinforced; seeing these good, warm hearted elderly women praying the Lord's Prayer and the Devotional prayer to the Sacred Throne of the Divine Mercy, the Holy Spirit, and the Pleas for those in Purgatory and consolation from the Blessed Crucifix of Jesus---praying with them, and as our prayers in unison before the Altar of God--it transcends any explanation that man can offer. In my personal belief, that is.

There are things that cannot be explained.
God cannot be explained; the finite cannot explain the infinite.
