Alcala graces Bohol Ubifest

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Jan. 25 (PNA) - Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala has cited the role of farmers and the agriculture sector in the country's food security and national growth.

Alcala opened the three-day Bohol Organic Agriculture Summit and 11th Ubi Festival at the Bohol Cultural Center here on Monday. His first official visit to Bohol as agriculture secretary winds up on Wednesday.

The twin events anchor on the theme Pagpalig-on ug Pagpakuyanap sa Malungtarong Panguma, Tubag sa Hulga sa Naga-usab nga Klima (Strengthening and Promoting Sustainable Agriculture, Response to Climate Change) and sub-theme Garbo sa mga Bol-anon, Ubi nga Bililhon, Tinubdan sa Panginabuhian ug Pagkaon (Pride of Boholanos, Priceless Ubi, Source of Livelihood and Food).

During the opening program, organic farmers affiliated with the Bohol Initiators for Sustainable Agriculture and Development (BISAD), together with provincial and DA officials signed an Oath of Commitment to Promote Organic Agriculture in Response to Climate Change and Food Security.

Highlights of the event included the launching of Tilapia Backyard Raising, the signing agreements on Gulayan sa Paaralan and Breeder Restocking Program, and promotion of ubi products.

After the ceremonies at the Bohol Cultural Center, Alcala visited several towns starting with the organic rice market center of the Carmen Samahang Nayon Cooperative in Carmen and the Bayongan Dam in San Miguel.

Alcala proceeded to the Bohol Organic Agriculture Technology Center in Ubay where he also toured the facilities of the 100-hectare DA-Central Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center to observe the tissue culture laboratory, plant nursery, and seed quality laboratory.

While in Ubay, he also visited the Philippine Carabao Center, the catchment area of Capayas Dam, and the dairy multiplier farm at the Ubay Stock Farm. From Ubay, Alcala proceeded to Pilar and inspected the Malinao Dam.

In the evening, Alcala proceeded to Dauis and had a dinner dialogue at the Bohol Bee Farm with local officials, partners in the organic agriculture movement from other government agencies, non-government organizations and the business sector. (PNA)

With Alcala at the helm of the Department of Agriculture and with the help of all concern agencies including LGUs, sustainable agriculture production in the country is very possible.
