LIST OF ARCHBISHOPS WHO WILL RECEIVE THE PALLIUM AND CHANGES TO THE RITE OF IMPOSITION

Vatican City, 27 June 2012 (VIS) - The Holy See Press Office today issued a note explaining the new form of the rite for imposing the pallium on metropolitan archbishops, which takes place annually on 29 June, Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul Apostles.

"Things will remain substantially the same", the note reads, "but this year, following a logic of development in continuity, it has been decided simply to move the rite itself, and it will now take place before the Eucharistic celebration.

"The modification has been approved by the Holy Father and is motivated by the following reasons:

"1. To make the rite shorter. The list of new metropolitan archbishops will be read out immediately before the entry of the opening procession and the singing of 'Tu es Petrus', and it will not be part of the celebration. The rite of the palliums will take place as soon as the Holy Father reaches the altar.

"2. To ensure that the Eucharistic celebration is not 'interrupted' by a relatively long rite (the number of metropolitan archbishops now stands at around forty-five each year), which could make attentive and focused participation in the Mass more difficult.

"3. To make the rite of imposing the pallium more in keeping with the 'Cerimoniale Episcoporum', and to avoid the possibility that, by coming after the homily (as happened in the past), it may be thought of as a Sacramental rite. Indeed, the rites which take place during a Eucharistic celebration following the homily are normally Sacramental rites: Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination, Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick. The imposition of the pallium, on the other hand, is not Sacramental in nature".

The following metropolitan archbishops will receive the pallium in this year's ceremony:

- Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, archbishop of Berlin, Germany.

- Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, archbishop of Guadalajara, Mexico.

fr john du was in cebu (i can't exactly recall the exact term of his function, but it had something to do with formation and vocation) before his palo assignment.  i understand he's one of the more brilliant priests in the archdiocese, with some managerial skills to boot.

cebu also has another brilliant priest, a boholano, loon priest father aloysius cartagenas, a first cousin, if i'm not mistaken, of congressman rene relampagos.

what is a pallium?  i got curious, so...

Form and use of the modern pallium

The modern pallium is a circular band about two inches wide, worn about the neck, breast, and shoulders, and having two pendants, one hanging down in front and one behind. The pendants are about two inches wide and twelve inches long, and are weighted with small pieces of lead covered with black silk.

The remainder of the pallium is made of white wool, part of which is supplied by two lambs presented annually as a tax by the Lateran Canons Regular to the Chapter of St. John on the feast of St. Agnes, solemnly blessed on the high altar of that church after the pontifical Mass, and then offered to the pope.

The ornamentation of the pallium consists of six small black crosses — one each on the breast and back, one on each shoulder, and one on each pendant. The crosses on the breast, back, and left shoulder are provided with a loop for the reception of a gold pin set with a precious stone. The pallium is worn over the chasuble. -Catholic Encyclopedia, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11427a.htm

The use of the pallium is reserved to the pope and archbishops, but the latter may not use it until, on petition they have received the permission of the Holy See.

Bishops sometimes receive the pallium as a mark of special favour, but it does not increase their powers or jurisdiction nor give them precedence.  The pope may use the pallium at any time.  Others, even archbishops, may use it only in their respective dioceses, and there only on the days and occasions designated in the "Pontificale" (Christmas, the Circumcision, and other specified great feasts; during the conferring of Holy orders, the consecration of abbots, etc.), unless its use is extended by a special privilege. -Catholic Encyclopedia, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11427a.htm

Close-up of Pope Benedict's pallium (note the pins on the crosses)

For his formal inauguration Pope Benedict XVI adopted an earlier form of the pallium, from a period when it and the omophor were virtually identical.  It is wider than the modern pallium although not as wide as the modern omophor (the vesture worn by eparchs and bishops in the Oriental churches, similar to what is worn by Irenaeus and Innocent in the illustrations), made of wool with black silk ends, and decorated with five red crosses, three of which are pierced with pins, symbolic of Christ's five wounds and the three nails.  Only the Papal pallium was to take this distinctive form. -http://archbishopterry.blogspot.com/2010/06/st-irenaeus-of-lyons-martyr-pallium.html

Director of Priests Formation or Vocation Director?

It's good to hear that... abi nako mga product lang sa Ateneo or UST ang mga brilliant hehehe... perception lang, of course  :D

We were hoping he'd become a bishop by now pero nakasumpaki man sa Cardinal when he was still the rector of San Carlos Mabolo. Cartagenas was my klasmeyt at IHMS. He's a member of the theological forum (mga tang-an theologians sa kalibutan). But unfortunately, last year, he decided to leave the priesthood. Oo he's the first cousin of Rene Relampagos. Last news from him, he's based in Ireland.

perception lang gyod, and more often wrong at that.  i realized that sometimes we mistake confidence for brilliance. :(

We were hoping he'd become a bishop by now pero nakasumpaki man sa Cardinal when he was still the rector of San Carlos Mabolo.

i heard about this; one reason why he was changed as rector with someone more malleable. ???  :-X

Cartagenas was my klasmeyt at IHMS. He's a member of the theological forum (mga tang-an theologians sa kalibutan). But unfortunately, last year, he decided to leave the priesthood. Oo he's the first cousin of Rene Relampagos. Last news from him, he's based in Ireland.

oh, my.  what a great loss to priesthood.  hinoon, kun di na gyod madala, why live a lie?  pero arang sayanga, tsk, tsk.

wa ani kahibawo akong sister, who happens to be his friend.  he's so thoughtful.  when our father died years ago, nikalit lang ni siyag tungha sa bohol, unexpectedly, to co-celebrate the requiem mass.  gikan sa barko, diretso sa simbahan; pagkahuman, sakay pod dayon sa barko ug balik.  it was truly nice of him and we were grateful kay nisamot kabug-at ug ka-meaningful ang mass with his presence.

when he was seminary rector, maninuod gyod tawon ni siyag kuha sa akong sister to teach parttime there, to help in the area of homiletics.  mao diay tingali nga niundang pod akong sis aning buhata.  either niunong o wa na gyoy oras sa tininuod.

this development about father aloy saddens me, but so be it.  priesthood is a lonely vocation and the expectations of the flock make it worse.

i wish him well.  with those great seminaries in ireland, he could very well be a good layman professor of theology.  i hope he has found his true calling.
