At least 24 areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were placed under public storm warning signal number 3 as typhoon “Pablo” made a landfall in Baganga, Davao Oriental on Tuesday morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA said "Pablo" directly hit Baganga, Davao Oriental at around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday and as of 4 a.m., Pablo was located at 40 km east of the Davao Oriental coast (07.6 °N, 126.9 °E) as it maintained its strength with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

Areas under public storm warning signal number 3 include Surigao del Norte, Siargao, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Province, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, North Cotabato, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Davao del Norte, Samal Island, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Negros Oriental, Siquijor and Southern Cebu.

These areas could expect stormy weather with gusty winds of 101 up to 185 kilometers per hour (kph).

Areas that were placed under public storm warning signal number 2 (61-100 kph winds) were Davao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, Zamboanga Sibugay, Maguindanao, the rest of Cebu, Camotes Island, Iloilo, Guimaras, Capiz, Leyte, Biliran and Negros Occidental.

Public storm warning signal number 1 (30-60 kph winds), on the other hand, was hoisted over Basilan, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Western Samar, Aklan, Antique, Palawan, Calamian Group of Islands, Ticao Island and Masbate.

Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Likewise, residents in coastal areas under public storm warning signal 2 and signal 3 are alerted against storm surges particulary those living in the coastal areas of Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat, Bohol and Leyte provinces where 3-6 meters wave height is expected.

PAGASA said 15 to 30 millimeters per hour of rainfall is expected within the 600-km diameter of the typhoon, which is still classified as “heavy to intense.”

Typhoon Pablo has maintained its strength and is moving west at 26 kph and is expected to be at 180 km southwest of Roxas City by Wednesday morning.

It will be some 230 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City by Thursday morning and by Friday morning at 780 km west of Metro Manila.

PAGASA also advised fishing boats and other small seacrafts fishermen not to venture out into the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.

If “Pablo” maintains its present speed, PAGASA said it will likely exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) via the West Philippine Sea either Thursday evening or Friday morning.

“Pablo” entered the Philippine territory already as a typhoon on Sunday evening. It is the 16th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.
