as reported by Kit BagaipoFatal accidents along the treacherous national highway in barangay Lintuan, Loon town is not uncommon as there were already over a hundred deaths due to its dangerous design, concerned residents said.
Since the 1960’s the Lintuan highway, about a kilometer from Poblacion Loon, has been cemented, according to barangay captain Nimfa Dagaas.
Over the years, however, the surface of the pavement became so slippery adding to its sharp curve that makes it hard for drivers to negotiate.
Moreover, the road is located beside a cliff unprotected by railings that is about 10-feet high.
Dagaas said, as far as she could recall, the death toll of fatal accidents could not be lower than 100.Last Thursday, around 7 in the morning, a construction dumptruck with 19 passengers skidded on the wet road overthrowing one of its passengers, one Eddie Ladia, a resident of Lapulapu City, Cebu, to a telephone post. He was brought to the nearby Cong. Natalio Castillo Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The accident prone portion of the highway, according to drivers, is very difficult to maneuver especially when wet.
Some drivers said that coming from a high speed and applying brakes at the road’s curve could easily send a vehicle off the 10-foot precipice.
According to Dagaas, when she became barangay captain in 1994, the barangay council passed a resolution asking the municipal government of Loon to repair the road.
However, until now there has been no action from town officials.
