A Review by Ronald Jones:

Harrison Salisbury has an eye and an ease with the nature and landscapes of China as well as an incisive sense of the political realities. Whether he is following Mao through the paddy fields or Deng Xiaoping through the Cultural Revolution, he creates a sweeping and convincing narrative. I recommend this as a China primer and I would recommend it to others who want to know the basics before moving on to details. Perhaps it's a little dated now, but useful nonetheless.
