Anna Karenina is a novel by Leo Tolstoy that was published in installments between 1875 and 1877³. It is considered one of the pinnacles of world literature³.

The novel depicts the efforts of its titular character, Anna Karenina, to escape an unhappy marriage to her older husband, Alexey Karenin, and pursue a love affair with a young and dashing count, Alexei Vronsky²⁴. However, Anna faces social ostracism and moral condemnation for her adultery, while Vronsky struggles with his military career and family obligations²⁴. Meanwhile, another plotline follows Konstantin Levin, a landowner who proposes to Kitty Shcherbatsky but is rejected because she hopes to marry Vronsky⁴. Levin retreats to his estate and contemplates his life and faith. He later reunites with Kitty and marries her after she realizes her mistake⁴.

The novel explores themes such as love, marriage, family, society, religion, morality and politics. It portrays the contrast between city life and country life in Russia during the late 19th century. It also shows how different characters cope with their personal dilemmas and choices.
