PNP warns civilians in military uniformsPublished: December 17, 2006 by The Bohol Standard
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Calderon ordered all police units to arrest civilians wearing military uniforms as part of the campaign against street criminals that wear uniforms of government agents when they commit crimes.
“The police uniform is a symbol of authority that must be used properly, and kept clean and presentable at all times,†Calderon, who earlier launched Task Group Motorcycle
Anti-Street Crimes Operatives (TG-MASCO).
Calderon issued this directive in the wake of recent reports of crime incidents, mostly in robbery cases, involving suspects clad in military and police uniforms.
The PNP chief reminded all police personnel to strictly observe PNP regulations on the proper wearing of police uniform. The police uniform per se should be respected.
Under the law, Calderon said offenders will be prosecuted for violation of Articles 177 (Usurpation of Authority or Official Functions and 179 (Illegal Use of Uniforms or Insignia) of the Revised Penal Code that imposes imprisonment terms to violators.
“The law also prohibits the illegal use of police and military insignia, logos, headgear and badges by unauthorized persons,†Calderon added.
The order includes prohibition on the use of manufactured shirts, jackets and other garments with “POLICE†or “PNP†markings by unauthorized civilians.
