Lawmakers want Pimentel as VPPublished January 31, 2001 - Bohol Chronicle
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tagbilaran during its session last Monday immediately approved a resolution requesting President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo to nominate Senate President Aquilino Q. Pimentel Jr. as vice president of the Philippines.
Tagbilaran City Vice Mayor Jorge D. Cabalit, presiding officer of the city council, authored the resolution. It was introduced and was swiftly adopted by the city lawmakers being an item under the special order of the day (SOD) through the sponsorship of Majority Floor Leader Rizalino S. Israel.
During the deliberation of the said measure, the city lawmakers cited that as a “Mindanaon,†Senate President Pimentel, once chosen as vice president of the Philippines can be assigned as chief peace negotiator in the on-going rebellion in the South which has cost the lives of hundreds of Filipinos inclu-
ding government soldiers and Muslim rebels and the destruction of property worth millions of pesos.
The resolution said: “Pimentel served the Filipino people with proven integrity and dedication in the following positions: Delegate, Constitutional Convention, 1971-73; Mayor, Cagayan de Oro city, 1980-1984, Assemblyman, Batasang Pambansa, 1984-86; Minister, Local Government, 1986; Senator, 1987-1992, 1998-2004; and Senate President, November 13, 2000 until at present.
Several groups are supporting the call for Senator Nene Pimentel to take the second highest seat of the republic next to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the new president of the Philippines installed through a popular uprising at EDSA last week.
To date, the names of Senators Pimentel and Tito Guingona have surfaced as the most probable figures to become the country’s vice president.
