Playing By The Rules

With this elections now less than a year away, expect people to show their real colors. It is interesting to discover who people really are when there is so much at stake and the when the pressure heats up.

In theory, an election is supposed to be an opportunity for people to choose those that they think would be the right ones to serve in a particular position. As such, there is supposed to be a period when people will find out more about the candidates’ qualifications and their fitness to serve in the position they aspire for.

Under this principle, people who are not qualified for a particular position for one reason or another are therefore at a disadvantage to those who fit the bill. This is of course on the assumption that people vote on the basis of qualifications.

This is of course more honored in the breach. How else explain the many misfits not only in terms of their qualifications but also of their mental and physical infirmities. There are many who are obviously unfit but who still get the position for the reason that elections in this country are not exactly won on the merits.

One sad thing about elections is the tendency of certain candidates and their supporters to be more preoccupied with throwing mud and dirt against their opponents with the hope that this would adversely affect their candidacies.

Instead of expounding on their strengths, abilities and qualifications, they prefer to bring down their rivals probably thinking that they will have better chances if people believe their allegations.

What is sad about this is that it is not only the candidates but also their families who suffer from the black propaganda. This is perhaps one reason why many well-meaning Filipinos who could otherwise render better service stay away from politics. It is too dirty and demeaning to them to be part of it.

Of course, those who want to play dirty should bear in mind that they do not have a monopoly of issues and dark secrets. In digging out buried secrets and skeletons in the closet, they only unwittingly invite reprisals from their enemies. There is nothing more dangerous than one who has been wronged by those whom he shared pleasant experiences.

One of the saddest things to happen is when former friends go after each other’s throat without regard for decency.

As the race tightens to the elections, it is better therefore for candidates and their supporters to bear in mind the need to play by the rules. Elections are mere games that should be played fair and square.

Those who do not know how to play clean however should not be too sure about their tricks. For all they know, they might get a dose of their own medicine.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
