Our own Standard
By Atty. Alexander "Aleckoy" Lim
September 3, 2006 - Bohol Standard

In this issue, the Bohol Standard is celebrating its second year of existence. It means that there are enough people who want it to live by patronizing it for the past two years. To all of them, we offer our gratitude from the bottom of our hearts.

The celebration is not exactly without its share of controversy. The reason of course is the claim being made by people who were once our friends. It is one thing to make a claim and another to prove it. The burden of proof now lies on them on how long they can pretend that they will not sink again like the first time.

Having said that, allow me to move on to more pleasant things. There have been enough blessings in the past two years to thank God for. They should not be forgotten because they are part of the history of the Standard and in our lives.

I remember the most important decision that we had to make during our maiden issue. The conflict in schedule prevented our Editor-in-Chief from being with the paper in its very first issue because he had to take the bar exams.

Koykoy insisted that we come out with the first issue even without him physically. He was proven right because the Standard has not missed a single issue since then and he passed the bar exam on his first try.

In the following year, his younger sister Alissa joined us in the roster of attorneys and the Trabajo-Lim Law Clinic when she passed the bar exam like her brother, on her first try.

Although there seems to be little connection between my children becoming full-fledge lawyers and the Standard’s first two years, we cannot prevent that. During this time, the Standard faced many challenges including the one I mentioned in passing earlier. The Standard has become the tool for people who were angry with me in connection with the legal assistance I provide as a lawyer.

I consider it a blessing in disguise because the Standard has managed to survive in spite of the many people working to put it down. We are aware of this so we are doing our best to stay afloat.

On the other hand, the Trabajo-Lim Law Clinic has also experienced a bumper year in the legal practice. The addition of two new, young and motivated partners has given us new energy to deal with the many cases that it is handling.

In spite of the available legal assistance, the Standard has not adopted a reckless type of reporting that would invite libel cases. This is not because we are afraid but because we try to be fair with people as much as possible.

We are trying to set our own Standard of reporting. It is an identity that we will try to preserve as the Standard prepares to face its third year of service to the Boholanos.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
