November 12, 2006 The Bohol Standard

The pool of casual employees in the Provincial Capitol is a concoction of a variety of talented individuals and among them is Boholano National Master Elmer Sumngat of Poblacion Antequera.

Mr. Sumngat showed his mettle and proved his title of being Bohol’s premier chess master by the topping the recently concluded 2006 CPG Memorial Open Active Chess Challenge last November 2-3, 2006 held at the Island City Mall, in this city. One of the activities to commemorate the 110th birthday of Bohol’s illustrious son, the late Philippine President Carlos Polistico Garcia, the pride of Talibon.

After finishing 6 points in the 7-round Swiss system eliminations, the attack-driven Sumngat scorched CVSCAFT Junior stand-out Michael Joseph Pagaran of Tagbilaran City with a score of 2-0 in their best-of-two semi-finals and then proceeded to outsmart Candidate Master Odillion Badilles of Alicia in the two-game sudden-death finals with a score of 1.5-0.5 en route to capturing the top prize of P7,000 and coveting a beautifully crafted Champions trophy.

Badilles settled for 1st runner-up honors and brought home P5T and a neatly crafted glass trophy, while Pagaran copped 3rd place and a cash purse of P3T and also a trophy. Retired army officer Jose Macute collared the 4th place prize of P2T after succumbing to Pagaran in the knock-out game for 3rd place.

Rounding out the top 12 places in the Open Division are as follows with their corresponding scores and cash prize; 5th place Gerry Milan (5.5 pts, P1T), 6th, Joselito Dabalos, 7th, Glicerio Pardillo, Jr., 8th, Achilles Villamor each having 5 pts and equally sharing a P1T prize. 9th, Noel Ray Gullan, 10th Juan Lopecillo, 11th Henry Batoon, all three having 4.5 pts and receiving P200 each and 12th, Carl Villaruz having 4 pts and getting P100.

Winners per category are as follows; Top Kiddie Boys - Kyle Bantol, (champion) and Marwin Garzon (runner-up). Top Kiddie Girls - Christine Barrot and Madel Aligan. Top Junior Boys – Philip Caderao and Jerome Galan. Top Seniors – Siegfried Saniel and Ricardo Ocoy. Champions bagging P500.00 and runners-up with P250.

Meanwhile in the Blitz side event Candidate Master Glicerio “Glen” Pardillo, Jr. reigned supreme and becoming Bohol’s Blitz King after scoring 6.5 in the 7-round fast-play matches taking home a P1T cash prize.

The competition was played with a time control of 30 minutes per player. The event offered cash prizes up to the 12th place in the Open Tourney, as well as category prizes, informative magazines and the specially crafted trophies. During the events awarding ceremonies the participating players and the Boholano chess community expressed their gratitude to the Bohol Provincial Government especial to Gov. Erico B. Aumentado and Prov’l Administrator Atty. Tommy Abapo, Jr. and to the Prov’l. Sports Commission headed by Sr. Board member Atty. “Dioning” Balite and staff Mr. Joel Rosario and to the Tagbilaran Chess Club thru its prexy Mr. Johnny Torralba for their unceasing efforts and all out support in making the tournament a huge success.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
