Bohol DTI echoes call for LGUs to monitor basic goods
Tagbilaran City (27 June 2005) -- Bohol Department of Trade and Industry authorities recently echoed a Department of Interior and Local Government call asking local government units to guard against profiteers and monitor prices of basic commodities.

This as Bohol Provincial caretaker Nimfa Virtucio over Kapihan sa PIA recently called for local distributors to reasonably price basic commodities and not succumb to unjust profits using the expanded value added tax as a convenient scapegoat.

Earlier, DILG secretary Angelo Reyes reminded local government units of their responsibility as monitors of basic commodities to effectively safeguard and protect consumer rights, in accordance with the Local Government Code.

In a radio program aired at a local radio station here, Trade and Industry Regulatory Commission Officer in Charge Joe Hibaya said the local DTI still conducts weekly monitoring sorties on Tagbilaran City's major markets and malls, but the local governments who are empowered by law should also do their jobs.

He said the local DTI is also available, should the LGU want technical assistance in its implementation of existing pricing laws.

This came after government authorities assured that there will be no additional value added tax for products already subjected to the 10 percent VAT, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said.

DTI representatives here in fact noted no significant and alarming price increases in basic commodities, except third class flour, which rose a little in the past few days. They said that construction materials in deformed round bars dipped while dressed chicken also went down.

Of course, there are slight effects of the rise in fuel in the past days, that also affects transportation costs, said Virtucio. However, she said DTI maintains a formula how to determine when traders basically jack up prices to the extent of profiteering.

In this light, local DTI authorities still call on consumer vigilance especially in safeguarding rights on adulterated scales that should by law, be calibrated by their municipal treasurers. This is so as traders often tinker with their scales to squeeze few profits, though through illegal means. (rac/PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
