I've enrolled to take Chinese Language classes at the Chinese Language Institute here in Chicago. Due to the hectic schedule,I will only go to weekend classes. I want to know how to speak Mandarin and also to write in Chinese calligraphy. I know a little bit from Bohol Wisdom School days, pero, I want to advance my understanding.

When i arrived at the hospital earlier, i was surprised to see that most of the patients were sleeping. Post-admission hours man, so walay new admission. Thanks God it wasn't as busy. Then when i went to the medical office room, lo and behold I found our chief resident, still donning his green scrubs and his white coat, slumped down on the table and snoring. Suddenly my agitation for his calling me to cover for someone had dissipated. I walked over to wake him up and let him go to the medical resident's sleeping room (where there are sleeping beds for on-callers) luoy pod sija, he's been on call for the past 24 hours. So now im here at the helm.

that is why i never understood how doctors manage to keep sane with such lack of sleep.

i think we're just conditioned into this. this conditioning starts in 2nd year of medical school when med students complete their grand rounds and clinical rotations. the capstone is during the internship years where it is required for interns to complete a 36 hour on-call every week. at first, the first on-call is back-breaking and exhausting. after time, one gets used to it. doctors also find ways to keep them busy, and also can make use of 'mini-naps' by necessity. for example, when i'm on a 36-hour on-call, im entitled to a 3 hour 'sleep' after the 24th hour of on-call. that 3 hours is very refreshing. in fact , even 30 minutes of sleep can help refresh.

prior to 1990, doctors were mandated to complete 72-hour on-calls once a week. now, in the united states, they changed that to 36 hours for the health of the doctor and also the patients.

however, i think in the philippines, doctors still perform 72 hour on-calls during their internship and residency years. mao na i have nothing but respect and awe at the doctors who are a product of Philippine medical schools.

i just got home. and now prepping food for thanksgiving. will take pictures of the process.

So for today, I will be cooking Italian Sausages served in my own specially prepared tomato sauce in basil, rosemarie. I will also bathe the sausages in Cabernet Sauvignon for a special taste. Preparing potatoes, bell peppers, mint, spanish onions and diced garlic as well.

Ooo smells so good so far. And i haven't even started cooking yet. Just finished the dicing phase.

Later, the baking shall be finished. Prepared cheese cake and personally made by yours truly.

Hahaha! I hope it tastes good.

i tried doing it once and i ended up drinking 2 glasses of milk to reduce the fires from my mouth. bwahahaha!

is it a tagbilaranon thing to like hot food?

Hahaha, probably so. Whenever he cooks roasted pork, or kanang lechon manok, mo ask siya for me to prepare suka and toyo. Pero, he always likes 4 or 5 sili peppers in it. hang na kaayo. so i always prepare 2 ; one that has the sili and one that just has the toyo and suka. bwahaha.

I decided to buy my protegee a better-sounding keyboard last October, a Roland e-09, professional use at a very reasonable price. I wish it was real piano but can't afford it. funny baya akong acquisition sa secondhand piano.  paid it with a postdated check kay wa tawon koy cash.  ang orig owner for sentimental reasons would not also want to sell it to just anyone.  gusto gyod niya nga someone like me nga pareha niyag alma mater.  da, tua, nautangan hinoon.  duha man god iyang piano unya wa na kunoy makasunod sa usa.  mao nga iyang gi-let go.  but just now, i'm also very excited because it had always been my dream to have the sound of real piano keys wafting throughout the house.

my sister, who's still on chemotherapy, received an award as one of the outstanding alumni in the field of literary and speech arts during the homecoming event of our alma mater.  she had our niece, another alumna of the school, beside her, ready to receive the award for her in case all those medicines in her bloodstream get the better of her.  (i chose to stay in the sidelights.) 

my sister managed to stand up and go to the stage, in flapper-era gown and headdress (to cover her baldness) and surgical mask.  she got a standing ovation from a crowd that filled the whole auditorium!  was i teary-eyed.  how proud our father would have been had he been around to physically witness this sister who was always the bravest one among us his children.

Aaaah I always wanted to hear that word "wafting" in a song... mao diay nay iyang usage. other awardees together with my sister--- pilita corrales and pilar pilapil, hahaha!  i teased my sister about it... so you're in their league, eh?  kini ra silang duha akong nganlan kay mga pop culture personalities man, mas nailhan sa uban nga rarefied ang mga accomplishments, like that awardee who is an international pianist and concertist nga niabot nag tokar sa spain. 

i must point out that pilita is a rare breed.  morag di graduate sa class of 1953, por santo wa pa man tingaliy natawo nato dinhi anang tuiga.  that makes her an octogenarian, aka diamond jubilarian.  por santo, ang iyang ka-batch nagtangag na ug private nurses, siya nag-miniskirt pa, energetic pa kaayong ni-perform.  she opened the program by regaling the crowd with 6 songs(!)--- english, tagalog, cebuano and spanish (she happens to be spanish-speaking too kay katsila man gyod tawon na siya).  whew!  she asked the crowd to sing along with her "usahay"; the crowd obliged.  wow!  what a real great singer, peformer, and trouper.  really, she's not pilita for nothing.

p.s. i knew only now that she beat olivia newton-john in an international contest sometime in the 1970s.

today i realized that i've unwittingly made it a habit to look for my favorite national broadsheet columnists-- fr joaquin bernas, solita monsod, randy david, juan mercado of the philippine daily inquirer, and jarius bondoc of the philippine daily star.

despite his tiresome writing style, i get to read the inquirer's conrado de quiros too, if only for additional information about our country's current state of affairs. 

ambeth ocampo is a good read for some historical perspective.  and i will always go for the inquirer's editorials, which i still regard as the most luminous editorial column of the land.  (i understand it's not just one but a group of writers who take turns at writing the paper's editorials.)

this goes without saying that i also read bohol and cebu local papers and some selected columns.

saw a lot of neuro cases last night. seeing pediatric patients with untreatable neurological pathologies is always heart breaking.

spent my time traveling, helping my best friend (aka husband) at the office (hehe!) and reading all i could about the muslim mind (and opinions) after that paris tragedy.  i came across one of the best, written by abdelkader benali, printed at the international new york times.  i'm going to share it in some other thread here. 

we truly need to reach out, first and foremost by not condemning the religion which, just like christianity, is a religion of peace.  we need to separate faith and rituals from the crime and the criminals.  in other words, we need to shed off some form of bigotry that we may hold, whether we admit it or not.
