After a non-stop 14 hour drive from Cherry Hill, New Jersey to Chicago, Illinois, we arrived here at 1:00 AM. I went to bed at around 2:30 AM, and now am back to work. My Christmas Break was blessed and everything I could have prayed for. There at home I was able to enjoy the sweet simplicities of family life again, far from the reaches of hospital duties and Chicago repertoire. A group of my old school friends and I were able to catch up by venturing on our traditional favorite -- Sushi Buffet-- at Tomosushi in Glassboro, New Jersey. My good friend Lee, Brian, and John shared laughs and dispensable jokes about each other -- ahh, like the good ole' days. Who could enjoy brotherly cameraderie without the traditional bottle of wine -- or two. haha! We enjoyed two bottles of Moscato and Reisling ! Sake, too !

On the 28th, I met up with my good friend Albert, a childhood friend of mine from Iloilo and who is also a Medical Doctor. We met up at Dumont, New Jersey and together took the Bus to New York City. In New York we met up with with some mutual friends. Went to a very nice restaurant in the Soho district of Manhattan, NYC. Then went bar hopping in around the upper east side and lower east side of Manhattan. It was nice.

It was a beautiful Christmas Break.

How was everyone's?

It's good to hear/know every one of you has had a good time during the holidays - maski kapoy ug spaceships rickety (LoL Ms Isles) - and now we're all back to our daily realities as well as our TB, etc, virtual realities. Like Bran I'm back to my clinical duties but not as a doctor but as a "patient" patient bwahahaha. I survived a two-5 days without seeing medical people without any hitch hehehe. I wish I can pronounce myself healthy (my body does! Bran thought it could also be a possibility by God's grace) but, oh boy, how do you convince doctors and medical instititutions whose livelihood depends so much on people staying sick and/or unhealthy (LoL)....

It's so good to read your entry here. Thank You for the Happy New Years text message, btw. During my drive around with my father, I had conveyed to him your fraternal regards. My dad was keen to knowing how you are doing and we both laughed at the stories I told him about how we met up in Bohol back in 2010. He told me to tell you, "Kummusta Roel! Mag kita ta pohon sa Bohol!" I told dad that maybe someday we all could meet up at my family residence in Tagbilaran (father's side). My family would like to meet you, btw. My Ante Beth, my Mammy Wella, Uncles Roger and Ray, as well as my aunts who do ask about you.

Back to the topic and notion of health -- my friend Albert and i were talking about the health benefits of certain vegetables. Albert is a Radiology/Oncologist resident. We were talking about the benefits of ampalaya, which actually has potent HMGCoa inhibitors, which has the same effects as the Cholesterol Lowering drugs called "Statins" eg. Atorvostatin, Simvastatin. There is a beautiful biochemical cycle that affects the chemistry of the body , the health of the body. The intake of green leafy veggies, and fiber helps in not only reducing cholesterol levels, but protecting GI health. Which in turn, affects the entire body.

I woke up this morning to the sound of my alarm clock beckoning me to get ready for work. When I checked my cell phone, however, I read the text message my beloved Mommy Liza sent me at 5:47 AM, "Happy you made it back safe to Chicago, ondoy. Daddy and I miss you and Angel already. "

I could not help but cry. A mother's love truly is unconditional.

I was suffering from a fever on Dec. 24 -25 tapos nag attend ng 2-day seminar on 26 - 27, then nagka trouble akong stomach kay contaminated ang nainom nako nga water on the 28th up to 31(not lbm more like amoebiasis).. but in the end, Lord never leave by my side, I feel better now and I did celebrate my New Year with my family with happiness and full of love.. ^__^  Kumusta pod Bran?

I'm glad that you're feeling much better, Jenneth. Its always good to look at the bright side of things despite the challenges that come at us unexpectedly. I'm glad that you were able to enjoy the warmth of your family during the Holidays.

I'm at work typing notes. Our departmental secretary is very talkative today, hapit ko na wa ug concentration because she talks too much. haha. I had to tell her , "O, I'll talk to you later after my rounds. I can't talk right now." I hope she didn't talk it personally.

Thank goodness it is a Friday. I wanna de-stress tonight.

Hahaha morag sine... it was all worth the trip. Usa pa, bag-o paman sad ko mata... laag2x basta di masaag.

The time is 3:26 pm. Helping the medical staff and administration staff compile statistical data for our feasibility study on a 5 year projection of medical & nursing programs in a 50 mile radius from our campus facility. How very befitting. Doing a lot of psychometric work today. On the 24th of January is my first day of my doctoral statistics class.

happy ko kaayo that the nurses brought food during lunch. i didn't bring food kai naka limot ko. so thankful for the nurses to share their "baon" with me and other docs. as always, the pinay nurses are so supportive for us poor young doctors.

I smiled today when I got back from work because when I checked my mail, I found a refund check for $70. Apparently I over-payed the electricity bill the other month. I didn't think so. Its just amazing how God sends His blessings according to His own time.

I had just talked to my good friend Don. It was good to hear that he is doing well despite his break-up. Luoy pod siya. May God give him the strength to heal his broken heart. I pray that the good Lord send a kind woman to him who will love him as he loves and as he deserves to be loved. When doors close, God opens new doors for us....

Today at work, I was having fun with the nursing students.

Asking them about the bacterial types that infect burn-wound patients. And quizzed them on types of antibiotics. Hahaha! One cute nursing student said to me, "Okay, Doctor, why don't you tell me about...." she reversed it on me. Gi askahan ko nija about antibiotic types. Kuyawang bajeha!

pondering on the frailty of the human condition. isn't interesting how we can endure so much physical pain, work stress, but be susceptible to the effects of a "broken heart". heh.

i'm prepping for another work week. today we had a day off because of martin luther king day, which is a national holiday here in the 'states. this week will be the start of another doctoral class, "doctoral statistics: medical psychometrics and quantitative analysis". there will be some 18 students in this ph.d class. i've met some of them already during last week's orientation; many of whom are substantially older than i. the topic of last week's orientation meeting was discussing the difference between master's program and the doctoral program. when it was my time to introduce myself, i explained that i'm currently finished the m.d and now interested in finishing up the ph.d program. one of the students, an older lady by the name of suzette, said to me, "oh you really don't have a life do you?".

no social life. probably, yes. i smiled before i responded, "i guess so."

i think this class will be interesting. i can't wait to start to learn the different statistical models that will allow clinicians to produce projections relating patient health issues and hospital treatment modalities.

Attended a medical conference in downtown Chicago. Had a very busy day today, and now still at work despite its already 8:33 pm. I want to just go home now and rest. I think I'm going to stop by the gym tonight to do some cardio and weight lifting.

The time is 1:51 am and im still up finishing up papers from work. Today officially marks my first day of my doctoral statistics class. I have to go to class tonight after work. Luckily for me, i only have class 3 times a week.

Na unsaon man ni ha. How will i juggle hospital rounds, teaching duties and learning duties? I feel stretched out. And I was a fool to think that doing a dual M.D-Ph.D program would be easy.

O Lord my God. I am so stressed.

Today after work, I stopped by the university to talk to my academic adviser regarding our orientation class for my Ph.D program's doctoral stats class. I asked her when would be the best time we, doctoral learners, have to start planning our doctoral dissertation -- and start.

She said to me, "Lorenzo, you have to have an idea what you want to research by end of the 2nd semester in the Ph.D program." My spirits plummeted. Two semesters is 8 months away. So I have 8 months' time to plan a rough sketch on what I shall focus my research on. To be honest, this Ph.D program, because of the 3-4 years of research & culmination of data on said subject of interest -- is really making me worried.

I am thankful to Carley, my doctoral program academic adviser, for her input in research and design, library resources, as well as introducing me to some student communities -- where we all could share our experiences and motivations.

Yea,... anyone who has ever finished a Ph.D is no joke. I give props for those who survived the doctoral research and dissertation phase. Shieet, dis aint no joke, meyn.

To tell you the truth, there are times where i don't want to get up from bed and go to work. There is so much on my shoulders and expectations from my family and my colleagues. I feel, sometimes -- honestly, that i should just stay in bed and do nothing. Demanding kaayo ang situwasyon sa hospital, jenneth. Having to deal with the nursing staff, admitting patients, and preparing the medical plan of action for patients -- which have various outcomes -- tallies up. Toxic kaayo. Truly, some days are so toxic that i find myself exhausted and intimidated.

To be honest with you, the only force in this life that provides me with comfort and support that uplifts me from this drudgery and intimidation is my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If it was not for Christ, jenneth, i would have given up a long time ago.

And, tubag bohol dot com, which allows me to vent my frustration and my emotions -- and express it. tubag bohol has been my therapy since my college days, through medical school, and now through my ph.d program. thank you for listening to my written thoughts. and providing feedback. all of you, who would listen to this poor man who dares to learn.

Getting ready to attend a wake. My good friend in the hospital, sernan, is going to bury his mother today. I will attend the wake and to help pray for the final repose of his mother's soul. May the Blessed Lord Jesus Christ welcome her spirit into His Kingdom in Heaven.

I went to visit a funeral wake today at around 11 am my time. My friend, Sernan, was grieving with his family -- his mother had passed away from ovarian cancer. Sernan is a physical therapist and is one of the college instructors at the university that I teach at.

He had asked me last night to help him write a eulogy for his mother. Quite a daunting task. To be honest, i wasn't able to sleep last night because I kept on thinking about his mom and the pain that Sernan is feeling right now.

Dealing with this awakens me to the mortality we all share. Despite our stations in life-- despite our own religious and spiritual upbringing. Death is real and death is sure.

I arrived at Simkin's Funeral Home, which is located in Morton Grove, Illinois, at around 11:50 am. I was greeted by some of my colleagues at work who had came to show their respects to Sernan and his family. It was interesting to find out that Sernan's mother was actually originally from Cebu -- but her family migrated to Dipolog. His father is from Davao. His mother, Carmen, was a dentist from Dipolog. She practiced dentistry here also in the United States for quite some time.

Na luoy ko ni Sernan today. Na luoy pod ko sa iyahang Amahan because I could see the pain in his eyes. I was able to introduce myself to his father and to his brother and sister in law and the rest of their family. Hapit ko ning hilak because i thought of my own Uncle Roy, who had passed in 2009.

Tears filled my eyes when I saw Sernan's father walk in front of the casket and said to his wife, "Carmi, ngano gi iiwan mo ako? Ako ra diri ug wa ka dinhi. Dili na diay ta maka bisita sa Davao? Asa man ko ug wa ka dinhi ?"

I pray for him. His name is Alfredo. I pray that God's infinite mercy will come down to him and support him during this most difficult time. May the Lord God have mercy...

catsitting.  i'm taking care of a neighbor's cat while she's on a trip.  joanne (the cat's name) sleeps under the bed and is slowly adjusting to her new surroundings and to our own cats.  so far, so good.  no catfights ensued.
